So, I am, as always, very late to the conversation. In this instance, I'm talking about the conversation happening months ago (happening constantly, if we're being honest, but which seemed to be the "big topic" on Tumblr and has since died down) regarding reading books not written in the US, the British Commonwealth, or Western Europe. The point was to encourage people to expand their cultural engagement to other places outside of the Imperial Core (Tumblr users being predominantly people from within the previously mentioned places).
Well, I quite agree with the recommendation! It's why I have the degrees that I do. So, to the 0 people who were asking, I'm going to offer some books to those who might be interested in broadening their horizons.
The following is a list of books which have solid English translations and are easily available enough to be found in a Barnes and Noble or obtained by a local library. I'll provide title, author, and commentary on it (if relevant, most won't have commentary). If I have an opinion about which translation you should read, I'll include that and why I'm making that suggestion; otherwise, assume any copy is good to go. There is one outlier on this list which I'll include at the end specifically for people new to reading cross-culturally.
I'm also going to include the reminders that cultures, especially cultures in previous centuries, are not the same as the 21st century US so you will have to cut off your assumptions and be willing to look things up if they confuse you. This isn't just about not judging the past by contemporary social mores but also just...it will prevent you from actually understanding the text if you don't take it on its own terms. Further, people in the past were just as smart as we are now and they were equally aware of their own social structures and can/do express dissatisfaction with them. Even books from centuries ago will be written with metaphor, allegory, and social commentary via exploration of negative behaviors. If it sounds like I'm harping on this it's because I've had too many students in the past who tried to woke-scold books which actually agreed with them but were just explaining issues in a different way.
Of note: this list is comprised only of books I have personally read and is obviously non-exhaustive, since there are far more books I haven't read than I could ever hope to read in my life and since I didn't want to just put out a list of my entire home library and every book I've ever read because that would be an obnoxiously long list. Non-exhaustive for different cultures' canons and non-exhaustive for the things in my home. I'm just pulling titles off my bookshelf. I am attempting to give works from different time periods and genres but am limited by my own background and personal preferences in reading. Also this list will not be evenly distributed between countries/regions because, again, my background is where it is so there will be definite over-representation of some traditions.
I'm also going to try to avoid the biggest of the big name books since you've probably already heard of them and might want a new recommendation (this is based entirely on what I consider "common knowledge" so it's probably wrong). Do you need me to tell you that Márquez's Love in the Time of Cholera exists? Achebe's Things Fall Apart was on my high school curriculum so it's probably not a very deep cut for most of you. Basically the equivalent of not telling someone learning English that they might want to check out this Charles Dickens guy in favor of pointing them toward William Morris or something to that effect.
If you feel like a book was egregiously excluded I assure you that was intentional: I wanted you to add it and share your thoughts.
Without further ado, books are below the cut. (edit: I forgot one that I had picked out to include so that's been added)

Love my girl! She poses so good! Must admit the shoes make it a bit harder because they’re not completely flat on the bottom, so I had to hold her hand in the last picture. But without the shoes she can stand like that on her own (see my previous post). In my opinion, the Minifee Siean head fits better on the @dollits D.K.D. body rather than on a Fairyland body. Siean is a more mature looking head, so I think she fits better on a more mature looking body. Gorgeous faceup by @studiodarjeeling ♥️ Wig by @frappzilla! 😍

THIS is the explination of the last part of my problems and everything ive been dealing w. its why i felt better at high altitutes. why quercetin and amitriptyline and NAC made me sicker. why I've had non stop joint pain and why sugars and starches make it worse. Why my AMA test results come back high but nothing else is abnormal.
Methylation and acetylation of DNA and histone proteins are the chemical basis for epigenetics. From bacteria to humans, methylation and ace

"Discourse" is far too dignified a term for the foolishness y'all get up to. We should go back to calling it wank.

is anyone interested in an educational rant (and my crack theories) about how long covid and POTS/HEDS/MCAS are related and how long covid responds to a lot of the same treatments that POTS/HEDS/MCAS does? because it is very possible to get better.
