Walter Moritz Muckenthaler (back center) was born in 1896, the eldest son. The family surname had been Muggenthaler in Germany, but, like so many immigrants' names at the time, it was changed to Muckenthaler when his grandparents traveled through Ellis Island. Because of their brave journey, the Muckenthaler family thrived in the United States. Many years later, Walter raised his son, Harold, in Fullerton.
