The beautiful thing about Yellowjackets is that the Wilderness can be interpreted through so many different lenses and all of them are equally valid and interesting.
You can read the Wilderness as a manifestation of the divine feminine; as the catharsis of female rage and expression after a lifetime of suppression within patriarchal structures; as an embodiment of womanhood itself, expressed through communal emotion, inherited pain, ritual, reciprocity, connection to the earth, and the cyclical nature of blood.
You can also read it through the lens of trauma and the arrested development it creates, as the Wilderness becomes a psychological space where the girls unconsciously attempt to satisfy the attachment needs that went unmet long before the crash (belonging, purpose, love, certainty, power, significance), only to entrench themselves further in that very same trauma in the process. The Wilderness favors those who were already intimately acquainted with suffering; it doesn't create their darkness so much as recognize it and it offers a familiar language through which their unresolved wounds can finally be expressed but are also deepened in process. It offers the comfort of familiarity while keeping them all trapped within it ("We brought it back with us"), and even when they leave the environment itself, that darkness remains with them.
You can see it as something deeply spiritual, a reconnection with culture after years of forced assimilation in an individualistic Western society, particularly in the fact that the show’s characters of color (Lottie, Akilah, Taissa, Travis) are shown to be the most connected to It. And this lens is especially meaningful in scenes such as the one where Lottie’s parents are arguing over her behaviors, with Lottie’s mother saying she has a “gift,” while her white father says she is “ill” and needs psychiatric help. Through this lens, the Wilderness can be seen as a reconnection to forms of intuition, ritual, ancestry, storytelling, and communal meaning that has often been suppressed or devalued through forced assimilation into dominant individualistic, colonial culture (which makes Lottie’s return to civilization and her subsequent involuntary hospitalization and medical abuse all the more tragic).
It can be read as a scientific phenomenon; a product of mercury poisoning, toxic gas exposure, starvation, or mass psychosis. It can be read as a cautionary tale about religious fanaticism and the way desperation for meaning can evolve into groupthink, dogma, and ultimately violence. It can be a supernatural entity, ghosts and possession. ETC.!!
I’m always confused by the argument that, if you interpret Yellowjackets one way instead of another, you’re somehow “missing the point.” I think the point is that there isn’t one definitive interpretation. Each one of these has a rich set of canonical evidence and fascinating analyses behind it (and each has its own problematic areas and missteps, too). This show is very clearly not interested in giving us an answer, it depends on the viewer and that’s how it should be! The ambiguity is the engine of the show, it’s why it speaks to so many different people.
