Navidson's initial descent began under the illumination of one of the magnesium flares. The light didn't reach the bottom of the staircase. The footage from the Hi-8 shows the sphere of illumination growing smaller and smaller when Navidson drops it, but it never appears to reach the bottom. His fear is so great he doesn't seem to notice the wooden appearance of the steps, in contrast to the smooth black of most of the walls underneath the house. The aberration from the expected material here serves as a temptation, the invitation that entices one to enter a labyrinth despite the threat of the Minotaur within.1
2. Lude called me today and said he had a hookup for some good shit, the kind of stuff that melts your brain out of your ears. I shoulda told him to get stuffed, but I found myself out with him anyway at some seedy club. If I stayed home I woulda just kept thinking about Thumper and how she laughed at me at the shop. So I went out with Lude and he's already three beers in, and he pulled me over to his table and I met the girls he was with. One of them had a tattoo on the side of her face, and she kept laughing at the stupid shit Lude said. He started in with me telling me to tell them about how I got the scars on my arm from the time we were busted up drag racing. So I make up a story and Lude's playing along and the girls look like they're going to come home with us. Some asshole comes over and he punches Lude right in the back of the head, and it turns out he's face tattoo's boyfriend, so we run out of there and end up smoking back at his place alone.
