âThe average person kidnaps 3 scientists a year" factoid is actualy just statistical error.
Eva Stratt, who lives in a boat & kidnaps several laboratories worth each day, is an outlier and should not have been counted
many people ask 'how do i know my art is good enough to start a comic'. this is a very common mistake. you do not make a comic to make good art you make comics because its fun and looked yummy
saying this very gently. how will you improve
me when i improve the skill by (checks notes) not doing it so no one sees me doing it badly
kind of want to start a testimonials wall with just this printed out next to a cigarette stapled there
"I'm just a girlâşď¸đĽ°đđđ đşđˇđŚ" when you were eight and the teacher said she needed some strong boys to carry something you used to be furious, and when you convinced them to let you help, you carried twice as many chairs as the boys with the righteous anger of a girl who knew she was just as capable as them. Where did that go?
I mean, in some very interesting Technically Correct ways, they didn't actually die? Now, they're very much no longer alive. But the forces involved are such that they didn't get any of the usual cellular processes of death, they simply went from biology to physics in less time than it takes a signal to travel down your optic nerve.
if you go from biology to physics without dying first you donât go to heaven the uber driver went over this already

If any part of your plan involves the words ânobody could be that stupidâ, please be prepared to be proven wrong at any minute at a momentâs notice. Pay in mind that the person determined to prove you wrong may already be aware of this assumption, and is already approaching your current location at an alarming speed.
âit will be fine if people justâ
people will not just
In 2011 I attended an event called Bmore Fail, in which entrepreneurs in Baltimore talked about their failures and what they learned from them.
What I learned is that there is an inflexible rule about how people interact with systems. If your system would work perfectly if people Just Would, and yet they Donât, then your system is bad and you should feel bad. Systems must be built with an eye toward âwill people actually do thisâ?
Recycling was a thing when I was a child. (The 70âs.) In my home in New York State, you could carry recyclables to a recycling center. Nobody did. Now in 2024 Baltimore there is a trash truck that comes every week to pick up my recyclables, and I and my neighbors fill our cans with objects that can be recycled, because a system was developed that was easy for busy people to do, and thereâs a lot of social pressure to do it â but the social pressure wouldnât exist if it wasnât easy to do. Only the most crunchy granola people bitched at you if you didnât recycle in 1979, when it required a lot of effort. Now it is considered kind of on par with spitting in the street or leaving a dirty diaper on the diaper changing table in the bathroom instead of throwing it out, if you donât recycle.
Your job as the system creator is to make it as easy as possible for people to do the right thing, and as hard as possible to do the wrong thing. This is why web forms have data validation (but too much data validation actually makes the forms harder, so hit the spot in the middle.) And if you want people to adopt social change, whether itâs environmentalism, accepting gay people, or whatever, make it as easy as possible. And donât guilt people about not doing it until itâs as easy as possible; instead phrase things more like âwouldnât it be cool ifâ. Itâs not the fault of the individual that they canât get things done in a bad system. Fix the system.
if users regularly fuck up using a tool you made, and your answer is âyouâre holding it wrongâ, the next question you should ask is âwhy did i make this tool so itâs easy to hold it wrong?â
Thatâs the problem with making animal proof trash cans for parks. The animals tend to be far more motivated to open the difficult mechanism than the tourists do.
the circus was in town that day đ¤Ą
happy lesbian visibility week to them
If you donât let go of your prejudices and past grudges, your heart wonât blossom. 2013 is coming, letâs make a change. We only have one planet so letâs show each other some kindness.
2013 is coming⌠letâs show each other some kindnessâŚ
I ended up on r/ADHDparenting (a subreddit about parenting kids with ADHD, not about being a parent with ADHD) and Jesus fuck.
Imagine how much r/childfree hates kids, but the only people allowed to post in this sub are parents.
"My kindergartener asks me a ton of questions every morning i wish i could give her her meds while she was still asleep so that she would shut the fuck up by the time she's awake"
"My 4-9 year old child is the most annoying person in the planet and I can't wait until he's old enough for a prescription because if he stays like this I'm just going to keep hating him."
"If he's too young for vyvanse start him on caffeine but no sugar! Half a can of diet cola with breakfast should be a good place to start."
"I started giving my kid her meds before she gets out of bed so that they kick in by breakfast time and I don't have to deal with her constant fidgeting and incessant talking."
Look I do understand the need to vent but an entire subreddit that seems to confirm the worst things that kids with ADHD think of themselves (my parents hate me, I'm too annoying to love, nobody will like me if I don't shut myself down, everyone thinks I'm loud and stupid and they laugh about me behind my back, my mom wishes i was like my brother, if they could flip a switch to make me into someone else they would, they would rather have any child but me, anybody would rather have any child but me) seems fucking ghastly. THIS is the kind of shit you put in a private discord server, c'mon.
Absolutely the fuck not.
Like, it's super important to me, a person with emotional dysregulation as a result of my ADHD *and* an overabundance of scrupulosity that leads to massive guilt spirals, to accept that yes I will have horrible nasty thoughts that not only form but also occasionally become fixations but *having* those thoughts and even ruminating on those thoughts is not a shitty thing, *ACTING* on those thoughts is the shitty thing.
That's why having a private space to safely vent (private discord server, conversation with a good friend, therapist's office) is perfectly fine and in fact can be extremely healthy (sometimes you can stop ruminating on your horrible thoughts once you articulate them to a more regulated human being who can help you to chill out by simply recognizing that you are upset and letting you feel your feelings in order to process them).
Trying to choke down all your negative thoughts before they form is just entirely too calvinist to be functional. Thought crime isn't real, expressing upsetting thoughts in a controlled environment isn't harmful, and you're not a bad person for thinking bad things.
Hope this helps!
phm is decently popular in japan and i mostly see this when i check twitter and see accounts posting pictures of handmade rocky plushies that are so fucking round looking it brings a tear to my eye
he keeps me sane

I started using Head and Shoulders ten years ago for itchy scalp and dandruff, and then for ten years I have not had itchy scalp and dandruff, so I thought âwhy do I still buy shampoo to combat itchy scalp and dandruff when I do not have itchy scalp and dandruff,â so I stopped buying the shampoo for itchy scalp and dandruff and can you guess I have now? Can you predict what currently afflicts me? Itâs alright if you canât because apparently I fuckin couldnât either
Cutting something out of your life because you think you donât need it any more only to realize that it was in fact working as intended and preventing a problem that will return should you stop doing this is a good experiment to run periodically with something small like dandruff shampoo, lest you start to think it would be a good idea to do this with like letâs say public health and the social safety net and vaccines
I had a liver transplant when I was 14 and like six months later I was chatting with my surgeon and he said âthereâs gonna come a time, probably when youâre a teenager, where youâre gonna think, âI feel great, why am I still taking all this medication? I havenât needed it in years.â and youâre gonna want to stop taking all this medication. Guess whatâs gonna happen then? Youâre gonna go into rejection and your liver is gonna start failing, and youâre gonna be dying again, and weâre gonna have to find you another liver. So donât do that.â And I said âwhy the fuck would anyone do that?â and he said âpeople are stupid.â
every once in a while when I get annoyed by a pharmacy or donât wanna get out of bed to do my drugs I think âugh, this is dumb, why do I do this?â and that conversation slams into me like a truck and I remember that I am, in fact, stupid

Every person on earth needs to read this post. It will make peopleâs lives a lot better and lessen the crises everyone faces in day-to-day lives.
I reblog this every time I see it because I am not immune to the recency bias
The Enshittificator
Digital products and services keep getting worse. In the new report Breaking Free: Pathways to a fair technological future, the Norwegian Consumer Council has delved into enshittification and how to resist it. The report shows how this phenomenon affects both consumers and society at large, but that it is possible to turn the tide. Read more on forbrukerradet.no/breakingfree
I've always wanted to move to Norway...
Guys I'm 7 pages in to the report and it's wonderful.

starting a series Iâm calling âStuff I like in Baseballâ
The big stretch the first baseman has to do to catch the ball and remain on base
When a pitch rolls away and the catcher has to look all threatening at the base runners when he gets it
When the batter strikes out so bad and he can tell
When the fielder gives up trying to catch the home run ball
When the second baseman tries to catch a ball twenty feet above him

Mulan AU where she does get caught by the other fresh recruits while she's bathing but Mushu helps her spin it like the lake is cursed by an evil lizard demon and will turn men into women if they stay in it for too long.
From there it's not actually difficult to get the other soldiers onboard with covering up the fact that poor Ping took one for the team and got afflicted by the vagina curse, especially since it would have been all of them if they hadn't gotten the warning ahead of time. So they agree to help him cover it up, because obviously the army's not going to understand.
Shang is... tentatively glad that the men are bonding and getting along, even if they continue to be deeply weird about it.
Ling: Hey man, what's upâ you've got boobs?!?!
Mulan: Uh, what boobs? Huh? Where did these come from?
Mushu: *facepalms and thinks quickly* (speaks from the shadows) I AM THE SPIRIT OF THE LAKE! BEWARE MY CURSED WATERS FOR THEY WILL TURN MEN INTO WOMEN!
Ling, Yao, and Chien Po: Oh no! The spirit of the cursed waters!
Chi-Fu: SHE'S A WOMAN LI SHANG!
Mulan: Look-
Ling, Yao, and Chien Po: WE CAN EXPLAIN!!
[One convoluted, chaotic explanation later]
Shang: ...is this why you've all been insisting we don't camp anywhere that doesn't have a lake.
Shang: and then none of you actually swim in it.
Shang: and you all keep jumping at shadows.
Shang: wait a second Ping did this happen before or after you became insanely good at fighting?
Shang: did you get better at fighting after you became a woman.
Shang: are women better at fighting than us.
Mulan: ....uh. well. maybe? no one's ever tried to find out.
Yao: [thinking very fast] y'know Captain it's just so hard to find recruits these days.
Chien Po: Real shortage of men.
Ling: Lots of women, though.
Mulan: [catching on] Without marriage prospects.
Shang: You're right, men. The spirits must have done this in order to show us that we should be recruiting women as fighters.
Mushu [from the shadows, seeing an opportunity to do the funniest thing]: EXACTLY, LI SHANG. I HAVE TRANSFORMED PING INTO A WOMAN BECAUSE YOU HAVE TOO LONG OVERLOOKED THE TRUE WAY TO WIN THE WAR.
Mulan [seeing an opportunity to get all the stories straight]: O Great Spirit, is it reversible?
Mushu: WHY WOULD YOU WISH TO REJECT MY GIFT? I HAVE SEEN YOUR HEART, CHILD, AND HAVE ALREADY ALTERED THE MEMORIES OF EVERYONE WHO KNEW YOU BEFORE YOU LEFT FOR THE ARMY. YOU HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THEIR DAUGHTER.
Li Shang: Welp, the spirits have spoken. Ping - wait is your name still Ping if you're a woman now?
Mulan: Uh. Actually, I was thinking of renaming myself. How do you feel about Mulan?
BONUS:
Mulan [climbing out of the eleventh lake the men have arranged for her to swim in]: Yeah no, it didn't work. Still got boobs. [tries to appear dejected].
Chien Po: If it makes you feel better, they're very nice boobs.
Mulan: Thanks, Chien Po.
Mulan and Mushu, somehow opperating on the same wavelength: oh haven't you heard?
right wing handwringing over birth rates has always unsubtly been a combination of wanting more white babies/wanting control over women, so it's bothersome that the popular response to that is just pointing out the cost of living. "we Would be having more kids if you guys made some positive changes to society" and such. pronatalist sentiment is becoming so much more explicit that I don't think many self-styled progressives are ready to reconcile with the fact that many women simply do not want to have children. we already see how women are demonized for refusing to undertake the thankless burdens of their mother and grandmother's generations lol, I can't imagine how full abdication from child rearing will come across to some people.
I can't even see "we Would be having kids" as a strategic approach to get conservatives to consider advocating for a higher quality of life considering that they truly could not care less if you, specifically, are poor. it's true that more couples would have kids if it was cheaper, but that will not be enough for these types until women's subservience is codified. even now, they consider the lack of child rearing in today's insane society to be a matter of selfishness. they view themselves as completely different animals than you. they have and will continue to advocate for more advantages for people of their specific backgrounds and income brackets to reinforce this lol.
