Social Construct Masterpost
I was inspired to make this post because of the mass confusion on tumblr about what social constructs are and how they function. I will start with a simple example:
This is a one dollar bill. It is an excellent example of a social construct. This piece of paper represents a specific amount of spending power in the society that it exists in (the USA). An individual person could decide personally that it represents 1000$ worth of spending power, but it would not matter because like all social constructs, the collective agreement between individuals in society is what determines the meaning of the construct. There are laws on the books about currency but it doesnât stop society from changing the meaning of a dollar; after all, in times of scarcity a dollar is a much more valuable asset than in times of plenty. The exact value of a dollar is something that fluctuates in tune with other factors, including things like consumer confidence- meaning, how consumers feel about the economy. Social constructs can change based on changes of opinion in the population.Â
One way to test if something is a social construct is to remove it from its native society and see if it retains the same functionality. The US dollar is accepted in some foreign countries, but in other places, it is just a piece of paper.Â
Another way to test if something is a social construct is to remove people from the picture entirely and see if it retains its functionality. Without people to give a dollar meaning it simply becomes paper.Â
Contrast the attributes of a dollar with say, biological sex.
Male humans produce sperm and much higher levels of testosterone than females. Females produce ova and offspring if their eggs are fertilized and implanted. Individuals who are sterile still have either male or female anatomy which serves sexual functions for the individual. Virtually everyone on earth qualifies as one sex or the other, with or without malfunctioning or variations. Is this binary a social construct?
Does the collective agreement of society give male and female organs their functionality? Absolutely not. Humans did not always have an understanding of how pregnancy happened, and yet it happened anyway. Individuals who donât know about or understand reproduction can and do get pregnant via sex. No matter how many people got together and decided that females inseminate males there would be no change in the function of testes or ovaries.Â
The functionality of human reproductive organs is also impervious to cultural or geographical differences. All over the world people get pregnant and have babies by mixing sperm from males with ova from females. There is no exception.Â
Removing humans from the equation also has no effect on the biological reality of mammalian reproduction. Male mammals are male, female mammals are female, and only one of the two can give birth.Â
Biological sex is not and never has been a social construct.
Another example is gender. Femininity is the easiest example to discuss. Lets look at different examples of femininity from around the world:
As you can see, what it means to be feminine or girly is very different depending upon the society. None of these is the âcorrectâ femininity, just different versions from different cultures. There is no objective way to determine what makes someone feminine in any given culture- you have to ask people.Â
The nature of femininity is totally subjective and relies on the collective agreement of society. If you move one of these women into a different society their defining feminine characteristics instead become physical characteristics with no gender designation at all. In fact, what would make you gender conforming in one culture would make you gender non conforming in another. Gender also changes in individual societies over time, so the meaning of being feminine in America in the 1800s would differ markedly from what it means to be feminine in America right now. How people feel about the construct changes its meaning. Thus we can easily say that gender is a social construct.Â

Disturbing ad I saw:
"You can qualify for a GLP-1 regardless of size" ...Regardless of size?? So you can be severely underweight and qualify for a fucking weight loss drug? We're openly selling ozempic to anorexics now?
I'm also getting mail from my medical insurance every week trying to get me to take GLP-1s. I am underweight and have never expressed a desire to lose weight to my doctor (or anyone else for that matter). So, they're just sending these mailers to everyone? Or just to women?

no one cares that you shave your legs because of sensory issues shut the fuck up forever
really galling amount of people misinterpreting this post so i'd like to clarify. i'm saying that when discussions about patriarchal beauty standards and the way women are heavily shamed and coerced into eschewing their own natural state of being (hairy) are occurring, it is unhelpful (AT BEST) to interrupt and say that the reason YOU remove the hair from your body is because of sensory issues. that's not what we're talking about. stop asking for validation for doing something that society at large wants you to do. stop derailing the conversation because you feel uncomfortable about being made aware that you, for whatever reason it is, adhere to harmful, unfair and ridiculous beauty standards. you're stepping into the middle of an important conversation that needs to be had and making it all about you. shut the fuck up forever.
also quite frankly i think a lot less people would experience sensory issues if they let their hair grow out so that it isn't bristly and rough and irritating. and i cannot help but wonder why these sensory issues aren't as predominant in men. maybe you're uncomfortable with the hair on your body because you've been taught to be uncomfortable with it. just a thought.
Men never worry if they look inappropriate in public btw. They don't think about if their ass sticking up when they bend over is reminding males around them of porn. They don't worry that their breasts are visible when they lean forward. They don't worry about looking crass by sitting with their legs spread. They don't worry about their belly pooching out when they slouch. They can wipe their eyes, scratch their face, scrub their face with their hands freely whenever they want without worrying about smudging their makeup.
They also don't know that women go through life auditing the position of our bodies and the position of our clothing on our bodies 24/7/365. An underrated but truly massive privilege/freedom.
My personal advice on how to get as much of this freedom as possible is to wear clothing marketed at men, don't shave, don't wear makeup, and have a comfortable and practical short haircut. Men will objectify you less in public, they'll leave you alone more in general, and also you can move much more comfortably.
news flash when you stop shaving your legs your hair becomes soft and doesn't irritate you . it's not prickly if you just leave it alone
like i really don't believe your leg hair causes you sensory issues when all the ways to remove it are painful and ruin your skin and grow back prickly the next morning . youuu can just say you like your legs bald
Stopped shaving my legs 2 years ago, can confirm it isnât prickly at all.

i swear, now that iâm in university and now that iâm a radfem i hate studying illuminism. when i wasnât that aware of the hatred that men had and have towards women i was like: âoh wow the revolution coolâ but now iâm like ... wow men are always opposing slavery except when itâs about women. this happens every time in history and thatâs why i donât believe in ideas about freedom and revolution when it comes from men.
"Men are communist, socialist, or anarchist from the waist up" -Antonia GarcĂa
Studying the enlightenment era as a woman is nothing short of depressing and disappointing.
All of those men who called themselves polymaths and geniuses, who had such well rounded educations in science and philosophy and government, who made networks of fellow scholars and intellectuals and were directly involved in growing literacy rates bc of the sheer volume of letters and pamphlets and books and treatises they published, who had a hand in society evolving and becoming curious, none of them gave a single solitary thought to women in an academic sense unless it was to espouse how foolish and inferior we are or that we are submissive and servile by nature.
(DONâT try and comment about Nicolas de Condorcet as a gotcha, I know he was an early male feminist but he was an extremely rare outlier)
Those men acted like they were godâs gifts to society, like they were brave heroes defying the church and the king and the institutions, pioneers on the frontier of scientific and mathematical and philosophical discovery, but the second they got called to task for sounding even marginally too anti-church or anti-monarchy in their writings they apologized and toed the line and wrote retractions or edited their manuscripts. They were only anti-monarchist until a sitting monarch sponsored them and took them in as favored members of their court. They were only anti-church until they actually upset the church and risked being jailed or executed for heresy.
Ultimately they were cowards and hypocrites. They called themselves humanists and abolitionists while owning slaves, they talked about how the church had it wrong but how there was obviously still some kind of divine creator, they talked about economics and poverty and the exploitations of labor but they were mostly lords and aristocrats themselves, they talked endlessly about the human condition and they didnât bother to consider or consult the other 50% of the living humans on the planet alongside them.
None of them would have been able to produce the sheer amount of work and writing as they did if any of them had ever washed a single dish or cooked their own meals or did their own laundry. Their âgeniusâ was literally only possible because of the uncredited labor of wives and servants who took care of them daily and allowed them to work nonstop. (PLEASE read who cooked the last supper by Rosalind Miles)
Some of them (Iâm looking at you Jefferson and Voltaire đ) went so far as to pat themselves on the back for being enlightened egalitarians while simultaneously writing literal examinations on what they believed was an objective inherent biological inferiority of black people
That type of cognitive dissonance is identical to the way liberals today will preach culture relativism while conveniently ignoring atrocities done to women and girls all over the world in the name of religion and faith. Theyâll say in the same breath that circumcision is wrong but that female genital mutilation and child marriage are important cultural traditions that we canât possibly ethically interfere with.
Modern men are so much closer to the mindsets and actions of their forefathers than they will ever realize or admit
we let tumblr losers whose entire sexual lives are nothing but fanfiction and badly drawn erotica of cartoon characters anoint themselves the Super Cool Authorities on Sex and thatâs why the gist of âsex positivityâ on here is just pro-porn and pro-kink and often nearly entirely detached from any actual tangible sexuality. sex with real people and real bodies and real intimacy. 21st century digital age capitalism in which your real sexuality is replaced with a wholly commodified form built entirely off of exploitation and massive wage theft. porn is not real. these people think pornography is sex and they want to call you anti-sex. lmfao
Imagine being a civilian on a Starfleet starship.
"How was your day, honey?" "Not great. Had to pick the kids from school early because the ship went back in time. There's a confused Roman centurion in the living room, btw. How was your day?" "Couldn't get much work done because Jerry got taken over by a space parasite." "Again?" "I think at this point he's doing it on purpose."
Child in the Enterprise daycare, drawing a picture entitled My Family: "This is me and this is my daddy and this is my daddy's transporter duplicate and this is my mommy and this is the subspace entity that poses as human that used mommy as it's template that calls itself her sister and this is our dog and this is the shape-shifting salt-vampire that snuck on board disguised as our dog but decided it likes dog food better than salt so now we have two dogs."
"And this is my brother Jacob."
"Why is he gray?"
"I tried to make him transparent to show how he doesn't fully exist in this timestream."
IDK it pisses me off the way people act like murderers are some sort of great puzzle to be solved when 90% of the time its literally just a boring freak that hates women
ah doing ma thing just like god int- (remembers im atheist) just like the universe intend- (remembers i don't believe in determinism) just like noone and nothing intended ever. doin ma thang fucking unpredictable style
