Emich was born a second son to a noble family of Count and Countess Distelfort. His brother Hans was meant to inherit the title, the lands and the family name, while Emich was supposed to only be an honorary Viscount without real nobility privileges, and be exiled from his brother’s lands to “keep the peace”. He was raised accordingly, rarely shown to people, shunned from the family whose love he desperately wanted. His education was mostly religious and martial, as he was expected to become a paladin. He completed all of the preparations for that, before ultimately deciding to leave the temple in favor of becoming a travelling knight.

For a few years, Emich travelled the world, helping the people in need, and receiving payment for it here and there. He wasn’t poor, but wasn’t wealthy either— just enough to afford keeping a horse and maintaining his arms and armor (a light armor at the time). His travels had no purpose other than battling the “forces of evil” as he understood them: undead, monsters and bandits. He would, however, not help against nobles’ tyranny, or systemic injustices, as he considered any authority to be in its right to violence or oppression. He disapproved, of course, but he thought there was nothing to be done.

That is, until he came to the land of Karatovia, a princedom oppressed by its Lords, the Karatov bloodline. The horrors its people faced were abhorrent to him, but once again, he did not feel it in himself to help them with anything but the monsters that plagued the land. Everything changed when he met another knight, Mstislav Dyba, leading a rebellion. While Emich liked him, and his methods, even, he did not dare to join the cause. When Mstislav won and became the new lord of Karatovia, however, Emich pledged his fealty to him, enamoured by the new Prince’s revolutionary charisma.

Dyba accepted him as his knight, though did not have him join the militia. Instead, Emich became the Knight of Thorns, Dyba’s personal sword (or morningstar) and shield. His task was still mostly to battle the monsters that the militia couldn’t handle on their own, and to serve as a symbol of justice and protection that Dyba’s rule— the Bloodlight, named so for the blood shed and the hope brought by it— provided to the folk.

Caroline Jäger is the sole daughter of Wilhelmine & Gerhardt Jäger from the noble Jäger family line, and is the younger sister of the sole son of the family, Tobias Jäger. Since birth, Caroline had been afflicted with (what the doctors had written off as) a hereditary blood disease they called "Paleblood", inflicting a pale complexion, frail frame, weak immune system and chronic pain on the poor girl; which progressed for the worse as she grew older, and is at its most terminal stage at the age of 28. She'd been housebound for majority of her life, kept away from the public eye as her parents searched tirelessly for a cure before the illness got worse, and with their conflicting duties, often left her in the care of trusted servants and her older brother, Tobias. When Tobias takes Caroline to Yharnam for a transfusion of "miracle blood", she is coerced into signing a contract that bounds her to the nightmarish Hunt, and with a strength infused by the blood, only seeks to escape the endless seduction of the blood and the delightful thrill of its violence with her brother, only to learn an insight pertaining her personal truth and the dreamlike world of Yharnam.
