PERSONALITY

Disillusioned and cynical, Mstislav seemingly can no longer see the good in the world. What little virtue he perceives, he tries to preserve at whatever horrendous cost.

Mstislav is a ruthless man, violent even, with far more compassion towards animals than he has for people. He sees them all as either evil or pathetic, and it’s unclear which he considers to be worse. He is perceived as charismatic, though, and while his subjects may despise his actions, his power and his authority are rarely questioned.

BACKGROUND

Mstislav was born into a family of servants of the Karatov family, being the only child to survive long enough to see adulthood. A clever and strong boy, he became a squire to the eldest son of Karatovs, Yegor, and eventually, became the knight of Karatovs. Yegor and Mstislav were close for a while, but as time went by, Yegor became harsher and crueler, and Mstislav eventually grew to be repulsed by him. 

Having abandoned his liege, he became the leader of a militia and, later, an angry mob that dismantled the Karatovs. He beheaded the Karatovs himself, including Yegor, and only hesitated to kill the younger children in the family. They were imprisoned for some time, then disappeared, and to this day, nobody knows what became of them. 

Dyba became the ruler of the land, its Bloodlight, a symbol of violence and hope. His rule began as a kinder, softer, more liberal sort of a regime, but he grew much harsher, more forceful in the years that followed. His militia became oppressive, and its protection conditional. His personal knight, Emich, enacts some acts of kindness out of his own volition, though they’re positioned as if coming from the prince of the land.
