Posted @withregram • @wildlifesos Last week, we recieved a call of distress regarding a female elephant Lakshmi - she had been grievously injured in a highway accident on her way back from a religious ceremony. The elephant sported severe injuries, was unable to support her weight on her hind legs and needed urgent treatment. We immediately dispatched a team to her location with the requisite medication and equipment to treat her. However, despite many sleepless nights spent by her side following an intense regimen of antibiotics, multivitamins, fluid therapy, laser therapy and painkillers, she could not be saved and breathed her last soon after. More than the injuries, it was neglect that led to her demise. For years and years, Lakshmi suffered at the hands of her captors, and finally due to an un-watchful driver, she was the cruel victim of a horrific accident that left her crippled. Lakshmi is not the first of such victims, and will not be the last unless you act now. Over the past two decades, we have treated a mounting number of elephants who fell prey to automobile accidents. Some - Chanchal & Bhola amongst them - recovered and proceeded to live peacefully at our sanctuary, albeit handicapped for life. Others, like Lakshmi, did not. Lakshmi's demise has put us at crossroads - we are heartbroken that such cases continue to occur on a daily basis. This should not end with Lakshmi - neither our work, nor the issues resulting in cases like these. We must bring to the attention of enforcers and authorities, that such deaths must and can be prevented. Will you help get justice for Lakshmi? Raise your voice and sign our petition now.
