It's me, I'm from Denmark

Last night I read a bunch of stuff about Grundtviganism, Indre Mission, and generally all the religious, cultural and political movements of 19th-century Denmark.

It's a period I've always found really interesting, because it's very much where the foundation of modern Denmark were created. Obviously we went from 800 years of monarchy to well, still monarchy but democratic, (Only for landowning men over 30. Other terms and conditions may apply) but our culture as well. Most things we consider intrinsically Danish today had its start around this time: Andelsbevægelsen (the cooperative movement), højskolevægelsen (folk high schools?), fællessang (communal singing), foreninger (associations galore), "Danish" food. Even the first hints at a welfare state.

And then of course there's the war of 1864, where we lost 1/3 of the country. A massive blow in many ways, but especially cultural. Hvad udad tabes skal indad vindes! (What is outwardly lost must be internally regained!) Our entire national indentity of the small, irrelevant country, that is ultimately a great place to live, stems directly from that loss and the Golden Age it abruptly ended.
