Something I feel like people getting into folk magic need to understand, for many people of many backgrounds, is folk magic started as a means of survival. It was struggle magic, and it is still struggle magic.
Where I'm living now and where I'm from, people planted by the signs to ensure their crops wouldn't go bad before harvesting. People used ocean water to soothe joint and muscle pains when they got old. People studied the native plants for medicine and were mindful to only take what was needed. People did little rituals and minded their grannies' words to keep their good luck. If they didn't know how to do something (or couldn't), they went to people who did.
Learning folk magic to reconnect with ancestral traditions from before your time is valid. Learning folk magic to connect with and work with the land is valid. There are many valid reasons to take up folk magic. Still, understand that folk magic is survival, and folk magic is community.

thereās something so sad about how we treat old people nowadays. historically, humans have accomplished so many great things because we valued our elders, took care of them, and gave them meaningful retirement. meanwhile we have seniors aged 60+ working in retail just to survive. can you imagine working your entire life, just to work until you die? in fucking retail?Ā
old people are not useless, theyāre not a drain on the economy, and theyre not all bigoted windbags. theyre people! people! who have lived their entire fucking lives under capitalism. they deserve to retire peacefully and pursue their interests during the final years of their lives. they deserve to be taken care of. they deserve to go with dignity.Ā
thereās a hundred things wrong with how society views old people, but i never see anyone talking about it.
āWhen someone consistently denies any negative emotions, focuses on āpurityā or ācleansing,ā or insists that all you need to do to improve your life is repeat positive affirmations ad nauseum, youāre almost certainly dealing with someone whose fear of anything ānegativeā is being repressed and denied as they layer what they believe is āspiritualā over their fear. But we must integrate the shadow, bring those hidden aspects of ourselves into the light and either integrate or transform them. Denying the negative aspects of our lives only perpetuates the negativity instead of healing it.ā

Woke up with this message from Spirit. I hope this helps someone.
āØšāØ With tonights New Moon (as well as The Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Mars) being in Virgo (stellium) Iām completely focused and inspired! Iām fully committing myself to testing different ways to improve my spiritual workings, testing new āformulasā and seeing what I come up with as well as how they work for me personally, and really allowing myself to be a little less judgmental of my own craft. I will be working with my intellect along with my intuition. I hope everyone will be having as much fun as I will tonight. Dirt
When hoodoo was created, most of the people using it did not have ready access to the best ingredients and often had to hide their practice. Consequently, a lot of what was used had to be things people could obtain. This is why hoodoo uses various roots, sticks, herbs, honey, sugar, and other household supplies readily available. There is no exception for dirt. Different kind of dirt is used for different kind of things but some examples include:
Dirt from the crossroads: used for many things including hexing/cursing, summoning certain spirits, opening roads, etc.
Dirt from a bank: Most commonly used in money work. I swear by bank dirt. It adds so much potency to money workings and every time I have used it I have gotten great results. Could also be used in works to get a loan, get approved for a house, relieve debt, etc.
Dirt from a church: This is usually used for works that have to do with cleansing, healing, or otherwise āholyā matters.
Graveyard dirt: A staple in hoodoo, used for many different things including curses, healing, ancestor work, goofer dust, hot foot powder, etc.
Some of these are examples of thingsĀ that have been used traditionally and throughout hoodooās history. However, all types of folk magick utilize whatever you have.
I have in the past used dirt from a car dealership(to obtain a car), dirt from a red ant farm(defensive/hexing), dirt from a destroyed/abandoned building(defensive/hexing), and dirt from a specific apartment complex I wanted to live in. *not all of these are my ideas, but some of them are*Ā
Folk Magick is and was about using whatever you have around you, and often whatever cost less. Do not ever feel like you canāt do effective, life changing magick with twigs and leaves. You can. Our ancestors did, you can too.
Tips for the urban witch #1: herbs and flowers
Hi everyone!Ā šæš±ššø
As a witch living in a studio apartment in a big city, sometimes I miss being surrounded by nature and fields to pick herbs and flowers for my spells. Luckily, there are still lots of very common but powerful plants that can be easily spotted in city parks and even just growing on the side of the streets.Ā I went to a local park today and I found so many interesting things! The herbs I picked are very common in my area (northern Italy) but Iām sure they are also very easy to find all over Europe and in many other parts of the world.Ā
šø Ā Hereās what I foundā¦Ā šø
Ornithogalum umbellatum (āStar of Bethlehemā): it can be used to help deal with severe trauma and emotional stress, and it helps to recover from grief, accidents and scary experiences.Ā
Lamium purpureum (āPurple Dead Nettleā,Ā āRed Archangelā): this herb is connected to the Archangel Michael. It can help recover strength and happiness in times of challenge, and to overcome obstacles.
Veronica Agrestis (āEyes of the Madonnaā): since I was a kid, Iāve always been fascinated with these flowers. In Italian folklore, it is said that these flowers are the eyes of Mary, that stare upon us to protect us and guide us. These tiny, blue flowers are incredibly powerful in protection against harm and injustice. But be careful: never use this flower for hexing or for hurting someone else.
Glechoma hederacea (āGround Ivyā): this flower is very powerful in protection against evil magick and psychic attacks. Using this herb will help you in identifying other witches and will help you reveal who is using negative magick against you.
Geranium molle (āVulgar geraniumā): these tiny purple flowers are traditionally used as a painkiller in folk medicine. In magick, they can be used to bring calm and peace and to help let go of painful feelings and experiences.Ā
Prunus serrulata ( āJapanese cherry treeā): in these weeks, lots of pink flowers fall from these beautiful trees, covering the earth beneath them in soft, pink carpets. These trees are very common in city parks because of their scenographic beauty. You can pick the fallen flowers while theyāre still fresh. Because of their fleeting beauty, they represent the transience of life and can be used in spells to encourage you, or someone else, to āseize the dayā and find the courage to act, especially in love matters.
Potentilla reptans (āCinquefoilā, āFive-finger grassā): I was very surprised to see how common this powerful herb is. Itās commonly used in hoodoo to bring good luck and wealth. The five points of the leaf represent love, money, health, power, and wisdom. Itās ideal for success in business and studies. The flowers may also be used in spells to attract money.
š Ā Preservation š To preserve the colour and properties of these tiny flowers and delicate herbs, I suggest putting them between paper towels and pressing them using heavy books, or using a flower press. Ā
šæ Ā Safety šæ Even though most of these plants are edible, if you picked them in a city park or in any urban area I wouldnāt suggest eating them or using them in tea for safety and hygienic reasons.
Happy spellcasting!Ā

ATTENTION: NO LEGIT SPIRIT WORKER/ADVISER IS GOING TO TELL YOU TO WORK WITH THE DEITIES OF CLOSED SPIRITUAL SYSTEMS
If you meet any spirit worker online who immediately tells you to contact an Orisha, Lwa, or any other spirit from a closed system, do not trust them. It is highly irresponsible. I donāt care if they give you an excuse or tell you that youāre a special case. Initiatory systems are initiatory for a reason. And you can get yourself hurt trying to work with their spirits without the proper guidance.Ā Ā
I know this may seem obvious, but please do your own research when it comes to spirituality.
Iāve seen so many newbies be given misinformation byĀ āexpertsā andĀ āgurusā who have their own agendas. The ego is a powerful thing and some of these people are making things up as they go along. Telling you to ignore initiatory rites and other rules and regulations of a spiritual system are HUGE red flags. If something seems off, ask them where they got their info from. If they refuse to give one or site themselves as their only source, they are not fit to be your spiritual teacher.Ā
Remember that spiritual work isnāt regulated the way that other job fields are. That doesnāt mean that what we do isnāt work. It just means that many people can call themselves spirit workers who arenāt exactly qualified to do so. I understand that not everyone will practice in identical ways, but some of the things Iāve seen being told to newbies is so concerning and flat out disrespectful to the systems they are claiming to teach.Ā
Your spiritual life is nothing to gamble with. Be careful out here, yāall.Ā
