The Creative Progression

Task: Create a backing track in Garageband, script a voice over for the University of Notre Dame Australia using facts found on their website. Record and edit the voice over.

This was recorded late at night.

The animation work and script were written by the beautiful Evelyn Tan way back for one of her assignments. Although, if you look at her current art you can see a big difference in technique #crazytalented.

Also known as “Hi Everyone”- sometimes I think myself bilingual when really I just know bits and pieces of a language, but speaking it is really amazing and having people launch back in their native tongue is enough to leave you reeling from the reality kick.

We've all been there. The impending deadline and the assignment or task that feels like "it'll be done in no time" when really, it's just been sitting there gathering dust until BANG deadline right around the corner!

So as part of my educational procrastination before I start to listen to my voice again I rediscovered one of my favourite blogs...

John August

Everything from how to's, to interviews and ideas. Really one of the bigger things I've stumbled across at the end of last year. The fact that John August is a screenwriter as well, is amazing. Because, he gets it. The struggles and the confusion. So bumble through and click around, because you won't regret it.

Excerpt:

New Assistant Matt came into my office recently, a look of uneasy revelation in his eyes. He was holding the spec script a friend had sent him to read. “It doesn’t just get better, does it?” he asked. “If it’s bad on page six, it’s bad to the end.”

I said yes, and assured that him that just like he got past the shocking secret of Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, this realisation was only momentarily terrifying. Once you understand that your parents buy you presents, that bunnies don’t lay eggs, and that bad writing doesn’t spontaneously improve, a new world of possibility opens up. In the case of scripts, it means that you can stop reading quite early — unless you’ve promised your friends you’d give them notes. Then you’re screwed.

And so the list goes on- but the biggest thing I've figured out is that as you film, and as you edit the story (at least for a music video) might not turn out exactly as you planned, because the edits will tell a better story.

I guess now I just have to try and get the story together somehow and do it justice.

Learning the basics of photoshop. I was in Adelaide for the first week of photoshop 101, though for the most part I'd like to think that (for the most part) I'm pretty proficient in it. Everything from layers and naming conventions, the magic wand, the paint brush tool, moving and erasing, contrast and opacity as well as the beauty that is gradient colours.

I also learnt quite a lot, with a few parts that confused me because I'd never been "professionally" taught how to use photoshop. The creation of a new image the dimensions I was familiar with, but the dpi was a new thing for me- especially for producing images for the web, and images for photos.

It lets me know I have a lot to work on!

Today's class was mainly the fun of editing and uploading the final assessment stuff, which I've already posted (yay).

So when that was all completed it was time to fiddle with the camera settings and select "RAW" footage- we were going to edit images in High Def... or something of that quality (another bad attempt at dad jokes) I had a little too much fun with doing this but here are some of the final products from the day!

Assessment Update: IT IS DONE~

Watch, enjoy, review...y'know kindly tell me how to improve. Oh how I wish I could have changed the font, Calibri is just so...bleh... oh well, to BED!

There are many things I would go back and change, but for now I'm happier than I was...

The biggest thing I'd change is the voice over, for one the quality is horrible which had something to do with 1) being too close to the pop shield, and 2) the quality of the "sound proofed room" I was in...which, let's just say was not sound proofed, resistant maybe, but not proofed. I should have gone with my gut, buuuuuuttt:

"shoulda, coulda, woulda"

Sooooooo...I needed to refilm a bunch of shots a few days back to showcase a 36LED panel light (the cutest little things ever).

At the time I thought, “seeing as I’ve recorded the whole thing again I’ll have consistent lighting.” Really? Really…

Past Paige needs a kick.

Considering I’m doing a tutorial on lighting, the actual lighting is completely out on this second shoot. That and continuity is wrong. Purple nail polish to no nail polish? No bruise on the left hand and- oh look! A bruise!

As a film student I know it’s all a learning curve, and 90% of the work you film you’ll end up refilming until you’re happy with it. It’s just the perfectionist in me is crying.

Jump cuts though? They're life savers. Legitimately.

So we're doing some drama editing today. I'm not sure who's footage it is, I'm not even sure who the actors are. All I received was the footage and was told to cut it together to create a dramatic narrative. And...?

And I had fun. I had so much fun, which I wasn't expecting. I was editing on action, which I didn't know to do- I just took my time and with a hawk eye attempted to spot any inconsistencies.

Applying what I learn, oh yeah!

I wish I had more control over the audio on the other hand. Video to come...

I not only scripted but attempted to film myself... which is a little difficult to focus when there's no stand-in, especially when you rely on contacts and glasses, both of which you "spontaneously" decide not to wear. #smartfilmstudent

Some of the shots ended up shaky, and of course a lot of them were out of focus... but it turns out I need to do a little more to reach the 3minute mark. I can do that...

I can totally do that.
