#RIP to a true TITAN of the horror genre... very few people can claim to have STARTED a whole sub-genre on their own. George Romero was definitely one of those people. You guys love zombies in everything... Walking Dead, Shaun of the Dead, IZombie and the such... well without this gentleman right here you would have NONE OF THAT!!! Not only did he start the zombie genre, but he was one of the first directors in ANY GENRE (definitely in horror) to cast a black man in the lead of his movie. Duane Jones was breaking down doors and laying groundwork for future generations of minority actors to come... and he was doing it in a low budget horror flick!!! Outside of zombie movies GR was still a king. Creepshow, Martin, Knightriders, Monkey Shines, Two Evil Eyes, The Crazies... the list goes on and on!!! 77 years was not enough. On Saturday July 15th we celebrate the 100th Birthday of Jack "King" Kirby... and we want you to join us!!! 20 years ago today Harry Potter and The Philosopher's Stone was published in England. There are only about 500 true "First Editions" and 300 were sent to libraries... so only about 200 ended up in peoples hands. One of these can fetch $50,000 bucks or more when they hit the market!!! Thank you JK Rowling for bringing this timeless series to life 20 years ago... thank you for not giving up when times were tough and you were basically homeless. This has to be one of the toughest celebrity RIP's we have ever had to write. Although many people played Bond, Roger Moore was the bridge between the first generation of fans and the newer generations that would stick with the character. Although all of the Bond movies he made weren't masterpieces, he constantly pushed the character to new heights that I'm sure No One thought they could achieve. This scene, from the Man With the Golden Gun, is by far my favorite performance of his (and has been my screen saver for years!). May The 4th Be With You... In honor of National Star Wars Day we here at CCD would like to take a moment to honor a lesser know part of the Star Wars phenomenon... Splinter of the Mind's Eye was a novel written by Alan Dean Foster that was released in March of 1978. The book came out between A New Hope and Empire Strikes Back, and was a solo story featuring Luke & Leia being pursued by Darth Vader. The release of the book served a dual purpose: 1) it would cross Star Wars into the realm of novels (the Extended Universe) and 2) if New Hope was financially unsuccessful it would be the basis for a cheaply film-able sequel. Han & Chewy are noticeably absent, and R2/C3PO are in it... but the action takes place all on one planet (so if it needed to be filmed it could be done.l for cheap). By the time the book was released A New Hope was a huge financial success and the film adaption of Mind's Eye was scrapped for a more expensive undertaking that would become Empire Strikes Back! I would love to see an Animated version of this story as a stand alone film... maybe we will get it some day! 30 years ago today (April 19th, 1987) the Simpsons first appeared on the Tracy Ullman Show in a short called "Good Night". Over the next 3 years they would appear in 48 other one minute shorts on the Ullman show until they would get their very own 30 min sitcom on Fox. Thankfully someone took a chance on Matt Groening and gave his idea a chance to live... and it has become the longest running sitcom in TV history.
