12. did you enjoy any compulsory high school readings?

i did !! i loved macbeth when we read it. i also enjoyed alexandre dumas' the three musketeers. i'm sure there's many more but those are the first two that popped into my head.

15. recommend and review a book.

well, i haven't finished it yet so i don't know if i can review it ? but i'm currently reading ken dryden's the game about his last year as the montreal canadiens' goalie and it is fantastic. i'm absolutely loving his writing style and his reflections.

20. what are things you look for in a book?

characters that feel like real people ? an immersive setting ? good writing? as vague and subjective as that it (i just know if i start editing the book in my mind we've got a problem lmao) increasingly, i'm looking for less therapy speak in books and more messy characters ?? i'm looking for books that aren't afraid of me/afraid that i'm gonna cancel the author. i'm so tired of reading things where it feels like the writer is walking on eggshells, like they're anticipating the way i might misinterpret them and are justifying/explaining themselves every step of the way. i'm tired of books built on tropes instead of solid character work/plot. i want authors to tell me a STORY !!!!! not a list of beats they feel they need to hit. i'm tired of condescending trigger warning lists. they have their place ofc but do we need to warn for 'canadian media' or 'appendectomy' ??? or even violence in a hockey romance ?? like..... i'm a grown ass woman who picked up a book about a sports where men beat each other up, don't piss me off. i guess that's not quite what the question asked, but i'm so tired of the current state of the romance genre right now 💀 which is a shame, because it's one of my favourites. and i'm not trying to imply that the fanfic writer to published novelist pipeline is inherently bad, but part of what makes fanfiction works is that there's familiarity with the characters and world you're writing about, so you don't need to establish any of it before getting straight to the point. but to me it feels like a lot of books these days skip the establishing and go straight to the plot which leads to a lot of empty characters and worlds that are very hard to care about because that foundation just..... isn't there. so yeah i guess it goes back to what i was saying at first: i'm looking for well rounded, well developed, interesting characters, immersive settings/worlds, and just.... a good story.
