It also happened to secretarial/administrative work - in the 19th century, clerical work was utterly respectable and seen as requiring quite a lot of talent and skill (which it still does!) but then along came the typewriter and women entering the field and HEY PRESTO “she’s just some secretary”

It isn’t limited to the US either. In my father’s home country, medicine is mainly pursued by women, and thus, being a doctor isn’t seen as prestigious or respectable. 

I’ve had the same thoughts, especially in regards to bio and anthro.

This has definitely come up here before. I reblogged an ask claiming bio was “the easiest science.”  This is exactly the reason for that line of thinking.

I just had this conversation about (of all things) soul food. Traditionally the province of Black American women, now suddenly it’s so much the rage because men (largely not Black American ones at that) are opening restaurants selling it. When my grandmother was cooking hamhocks they were bad for us, now suddenly they’re haute cuisine as long as the face selling them is male. Same thing with government work, now that more women are civil servants it’s no accident that we’re getting that “lazy government workers taking advantage of taxpayers” schtick every 5 minutes from politicians.

i feel this hard with psychology. my university class was dominated by women (probably about 80-90%, depending on what year, as more and more people dropped out of the subject). and what’s that? psychology “isn’t a real science”? how original.

I know right. Basically everything he tweets is utter garbage. I kinda don't know what I expected - I'm pretty left wing/liberal but I try to be even-handed with other people's politics, but a lot of his views are just vile. So disappointing.
