…and there is literally no reason for fans to elevate Aegon to heroic status while dismissing Rhaenyra as an evil bitch. They are both evil because they are both monarchs with a bloodthirsty desire to claim the thrown, a literal symbol of the depravity of their family, at the expense of the common folk.

They both feel entitled to it. Rhaenyra, because of prophesy and because she was declared the heir. Aegon, because he was literally born male. That is it. If you look at Rhaenyra’s ruthlessness in getting what was promised to her and you think she is just a bitch but then you look at Aegon’s ruthlessness as him doing what needs to be done to get what is “rightfully” his then you’re a misogynist.

You’re a misogynist not because you should support and agree with Rhaenyra but because you believe that when men abuse their power to reach their goals, it’s acceptable, but a woman who does it must be reduced down to insults of their gender. But guess what? Aegon is also a bitch and a whore and the common folk die by the thousands either way.

I don’t defend villain characters because I agree with their actions. I “defend” villain characters because the media illiterate, anti-intellectuals refuse to believe villains have complex motivations other than the boring as hell “they’re just evil for no reason” conclusions people will make. Some of y’all will really say shit like “I hate when they give a villain [insert factors that shapes their motivations, behaviors, attitudes, beliefs, actions, etc.]” because you honestly cannot handle the fact that villains can live a complex existence within a narrative and that this complex existence is extremely relevant to the major themes within a fictional work.

“B-but then people will think their actions are okay!” They are literally fictional. People don’t need a fictional character to motivate them to do evil shit. You would realize this if you paid attention to the purpose of the villain in the narrative in the first place. “B-but people actually like this character despite the depraved things they do!” Well this may blow your mind, but a person having a villain as their pfp making silly edits of them isn’t typically the same person restricting human rights and committing heinous crimes. Shocking! …I know, that a person minding their own business enjoying what a fictional character brings to a narrative isn’t secretly a Serial Killer.

So, no, I don’t think that their actions are morally and ethically acceptable but it’s annoying to ignore the entire reason why they did them. It’s annoying to state that people shouldn’t enjoy the character as if everyone in a fandom must renounce and rebuke The Big Bads like they’re Satan and our souls depend on it. It’s annoying to act as if we’re not allowed to be excited about choices made within a narrative that we would never want someone to make in real life. Fiction is a great way to safely explore moral and ethical quandaries, and do so using the most cunty looking evil bitches as vehicles for it.
