While flint is able to throw sparks from carbon steel, it cannot always be found easily. This mineral rock I found looked like a quartzite rock I had read about in a book. After breaking a few pieces off, I gave it a few strikes. To my surprise it did throw excellent sparks from my steel striker.

As long as an individual had a striker or carbon steel knife, they would be able to start fires even in the absence of flint or other methods.

Hericium erinaceus, more commonly known as “Lion’s Mane”.

Choice edible when young with an extremely mild flavor and lobster texture. Not the first time I’ve had the fungus, but the first time finding it on my own. 3 of my books lump a few different varieties of tooth fungus under Lion’s Mane, including the lower right one as well. From what I have read, there is no toxic lookalike in my region, which helps tame the foraging frights.
