Consider If Hugo had wanted to talk for hours about Enjolras’ interest in revolution he COULD HAVE because Enjolras is literally LEADING THE REVOLUTION. Enjolras has a fierce love for the people and for his friends. He has so much passion for helping people and bringing change. He cares SO MUCH about everything that he literally started a revolution. If Hugo had wanted to talk about how much love and passion Enjolras had, he could have but instead he chose to let us read between the lines because all of that is implied with “Enjolras is the leader of the student group”.

I think it’s also because Hugo wanted to show us that Combeferre could be a truly astonishing man for other 19th century people. I mean, we meet Les Amis in late 1820s/really early 1830s, Darwin published his book about evolution in 1859, there was no anaesthesia (Wells used nitrous oxide in 1840s). Of course everything was much better than in the 14th, 16th and even 18th centuries, but still I think that Combeferre being interested in so many things (medicine, science, education etc etc) would be considered to be rather strange. Hugo writing Combeferre’s description wanted to tell us ‘’hey! This dude is too modern for his times!’’ (and that’s maybe why he dies while looking at the sky? Because the world, the 19th century was too small for him?)
