Avowal went through several name changes before I settled on it's final title. I first thought about calling it Calamity, but I felt like that could very easily be misconstrued as me calling Luna's birth a calamity (which it certainly wasn't meant to) when instead the title would have referred to the ideological differences both Pietro and Erik had had up until that point. I then thought about calling it Untitled because I liked the idea of this chapter of their lives being something they'd never experienced before therefore they didn't have a name for it therefore the work was untitled, but I thought that it didn't fit cohesively with the other two titles in the series so I scrapped that.

Then, I ended up going on the Merriam Webster website and looking for synonyms for the word "declaration" as I felt like a large theme of the third installment was Pietro being honest about how he felt and Erik owning up to the truth and opening up about his past. These things aren't quite declarations, but they're close. The word Avowal is defined by Merriam Webster two ways, one of which being "a solemn and often public declaration of the truth or existence of something" and the other "an open declaration of something (as a fault or the commission of an offense) about oneself".

When I read those definitions I knew I had found my title.

Erik's UN speech is reframed in this AU as also being about Luna and wanting to create a better world for both his human and mutant grandchildren. I felt like the public declaration at the UN fit in nicely with the first definition, and Erik admitting that he was in the wrong to Pietro and not forcing him to forgive him was like a declaration of his faults. It's for those reasons that I picked the word Avowal to be the title!
