I’m not a poet. I’m just a woman. And as a woman, there’s no way for me to make my own money. Not enough to earn a living, or to support my family. If I had my own money, which I don’t, that money would belong to my husband the moment we got married. If we had children, they would be his, not mine. They would be his property. So, don’t sit there and tell me that marriage isn’t an economic proposition, because it is. There are bad men that will prey on you in this community. They think that because you like traditional gender roles, or aspire to be a stay-at-home mother that you will be easy to push around and manipulate. These men will seem charming at first because they are saying what they know you want to hear. Learn the red flags. Memorize them. Always trust your gut. And never, EVER settle for someone because they convince you that you can’t do better.
