The consider each other mother and son and that should not dismissed. A lot of people have been raised by a grandparent and consider them their parent. Family is messy and complicated and doesn’t need to fit into neat little boxes to be valid.

I do kinda laugh when people who genuinely hate Jason Todd (actually hate, not just jokes) want DC to kill him off again so they stop hearing about him. You do realize the man’s importance to the narrative grows exponentially in death right? You won’t escape him just by him dying and the entirety of Batman comics from the 90s and early 2000s show this. His death permeates the story and seeps into everything.

Jinshi and Maomao are both capable of very easily manipulating each other into ceasing their self destructive behavior. All they have to do is threaten to do the exact same thing the other one is doing and it works like a charm. Oh you’re not eating? Guess I’m not hungry either! You won’t sleep? Guess we’ll both stay awake.
