Hello hello! Happy Summerfest :) I'm glad you're interested!

In Souls of Black, the cycle of death and regeneration for everyone is indeed the natural state of things. It's facilitated by a plane of existence called The Black, where everyone is created from. They go into it when they die, and it regenerates them and their bodies!

On the topic of birth, people in SoB aren't born the way that real people are. As I said, they come from The Black, and the very first time they're created is called an Awakening. People are usually Awakened as adults, and children as possible, but rare. Younger ages are rarer the younger the age is. Currently the youngest character by physical age is Coder, who is 17. People on Dridon (the supercontinent setting of SoB) don't experience sexual or romantic attraction for the most part, and are functionally asexual as well.

As for regeneration, people come back basically instantly. There's a process to regenerating from death: bones, blood, flesh, skin, then shadows of The Black that form the person's clothing. But regeneration happens essentially instantaneously, even though descriptions of it are long-winded. So, sort of like resurrection, just done by The Black.

The above is the also same sequence that devourment regeneration follows, which is the process of regenerating/healing oneself when they eat food!

I will say, there are themes of reincarnation in Souls of Black... but that's all I can say on it :)

There are lots of reasons why it was practical for Kit to take on an apprentice, and why it should be Alex. Georgie walks him through those fairly early on and, though he protests, he gets it. But, while he trains Alex and does all of the things he's supposed to do, he's still not sold on the idea. He still thinks he can save the world on his own, and would rather protect Alex from what could happen to him in the field (despite taking the dangers and realities of the job extremely seriously during his training).

True to form, the moment at which Alex becomes indispensable to him is when Kit himself is injured and unable to carry out his duties. Unbeknownst to him, Georgie authorises Alex's first 'solo' hunt during this period (with Georgie not physically present but, of course, only a phone call away). When Kit finds out, he's angry, but also... relieved? It's a real watershed moment for him having to let go of the reins a little and treat Alex as a capable fighter in his own right, even if it'll take him a long time to reach Kit's exact skill level and understanding of the profession's intricacies.

The fact is, Kit and Georgie are terribly overstretched. Georgie could go out into the field if needed, but Kit would rather limp himself out there, injury and all, than permit them to place themselves at risk without at least having Kit as backup.

I’m participating with work from my original/fandom series Fantasy Worlds Collide, exploring my characters as they wander through their own abandoned grounds and lingering mysteries. Some are grounded in reality, while others are far beyond it.

Fantasy Worlds Collide is an epic multiversal dark fantasy and crossover romance series that blends celestial cosmology, angelic rebellions, Final Fantasy 7, and alternate universes.

Fae are real, and their realm is sort of... next-door to ours, while also being sort-of overlaid on ours.

So think of it as two fields, right? In one field there's us, humans. In the field next door, there's Fae. Between us both, there's a hedge.

Sometimes bits of the hedge will collapse, allowing things from one field to wander on through to other field; those collapses are the breaches. They're not strictly caused by the Fae, but that's what the humans call them because to the human's perspective, when a breach happens, so do Fae and other Fae-aligned creatures.
