My Toxic Ex (D&D5e)
So, there's a thing called Neon Odyssey coming out. Which is gorgeous. The art is amazing, it has a super cool music video promo thing. It's so cool. But it's D&D5e. I'm going to run it, at least once, but I'm going to be annoyed the whole time because it's 5e. It's not even a clever retooling or heartbreaker, it's just literally D&D5.5 with some very bright paint on top. And this has me thinking about one of my biggest disappointments: Starfinder 2e. On paper, it's everything I could want. The art is amazing, and the options and abilities sound cool. The system just falls flat for me. It doesn't feel cool in play, it feels like homework. And this got me thinking... D&D5e is like a toxic ex, who swears he's changed (he hasn't), and even though I know I'm going to regret it, I keep choosing him. Meanwhile, Starfinder 2e is like the really good guy, who has his shit together, and would treat me like a princess, but I just don't like him that way. I just don't have those kinds of feelings for him. So, I will have one more fling with D&D5e, before finally growing up and setting some boundaries. While lamenting the fact that Starfinder 2e is more like a brother to me, and that's not enough to build a relationship on (it's not fair to him, and it's not fair to me).
If 5e is a toxic ex (which it absolutely is), then Draw Steel is my Mr Right who gets on with all my friends. I recommend it to absolutely anybody! It's designed from the ground up with the guiding star of being as fun to play (and run!) as possible and I believe it achieves that goal. The content has tons of cool fantasy nonsense, with a scifi setting that's getting its own adventure written and playtested as we speak!
I humbly believe no one in the ttrpg space is doing things the way MCDM is doing them. If you're looking for partner who respects you but still has their own vision, I think Draw Steel is worth at least a first date.
Day 8: Ame from Worlds Beyond Number!! This is my favorite actual play series to date. The world and the characters are just incredible and I hope to do them justice with these songs!!

Ok but let me go into more detail about this because it ruined me for multiple reasons. First of all False Hope just emotionally kills me every time. Having a good thing and losing it for reasons outside of your control? I'm weeping.
Second, Aabria's correlation to the swamp scene in The Neverending Story is so true. And guess what? I was always crushed at that scene as well :) What caught me off guard though was how joyful Aabria was that she and Brennan got to play a scene like that.
I like to think of myself as someone who knows the basics of writing and storytelling, but it had never occurred to me that fucking up a character THAT much would create such JOY for the writer.
I thought it would be like a sombre event where the creators go "😔 tis such a shame to do this to my babies, but sacrifices must be made for the sake of art" but no, Aabria is cackling with excitement at this guy's life being over and him being pathetic about it. And honestly? Good for her. She and Brennan made a damn good scene.
