He wasnāt nearly as intimidating when he smiled, which he suddenly seemed unable to repress, and she thought she rather preferred him this way; his openness was inviting, and she wondered how many other people had simply walked away from him without stopping for even a moments conversation. She almost began redoing her blouse back up when she noticed movement out of the corner of her eye, but when she looked up, he was in the same position he had been. He did catch her eye, though, miming the tattoo behind her ear, and she obliged without a word, tilting her head and skirting her hair out of the way for him to see it better behind her ear. āMade my skull rattle,ā she says, eyes crinkling slightly when she smiles at him again.
Jukes was not a stranger to the subtleties of social cues and the complexities of conversational appropriateness. Having spent years as the passive observer, he remained witness to all the connections established, strengthened, and broken within Neverland. In theory, it meant that Jukes was an expert on all the little quirks that made friendships possible, the slight differences that turned a friendly pat on the shoulder into a threatening clap or that twisted a relatively simplistic phrase into a flirtatious come-on. However, in actuality, without an outlet in which to execute his knowledge, Jukes still remained confused about a lot of things. Such as, for example, the importance of personal space during friendly conversation.
Luckily, Jukes was able to catch himself in enough time before he simply reached out and touched Braddock without warning. Still, he was happy when she obliged him, pulling aside her hair so he could see her tattoo. Smiling, he nodded, impressed with the beauty and design of it. He gave a cluck of his tongue in sympathy and smirked - I bet. With a sigh, he then stretched out his legs along the deck, shifting to collect Phantasm from around his neck. Looking back over at Braddock, he curled his free hand around an invisible fountain pen and pretended the snake was parchment, miming calligraphy and a checklist. With a look of contemplation on his face, he finally gestured to her, knowing that his charades were rather vague this time, but hoping she understood him all the same - You mentioned you had chores? A list of things to check off?
