A beautiful morning was dawning outside of the Bullmar outpost, the sun glittering on the fresh leaves of the trees growing densely outside of its walls. The forest was full of the sound of birdsong- except for a small clearing, which had gone oddly silent.
Something waited there, observing just how bright it was and moving into the shadows as it felt the cool of the early morning beginning to dissipate. It sat in the shade, simply waiting and watching. It hungered- what for, it wasnât quite sure, but it wouldnât turn down anything that seemed edible. And so, it waited.

âIt isnât important,â He replied brusquely, half lifting them over a rut in the narrow path through the woods.

Their first moments were filled with the sounds of catastrophe. Their very small world was coming to pieces, engulfed in flame, the sound of burning wood roaring in their ears.
Itâs so bright⌠They thought, the fire dazzling their eyes. They reached out to touch it, shouting when it burned, something they hadnât expected.
Bad. I have to get out of here. They decided, flinching at the hot embers against their skin. They dragged themself forward, struggling out of the rubble and crying out at the fire and broken stone against their skin.
Relief⌠They went limp as soon as they were clear of the flames, laying on the scorched ground and trying to catch their breath through the coughing. They couldnât rest for too long, though, it wasnât safe here. I canât. I have to. I canât. They tried to pick themself up, too tired and too weak to get to their feet.
The sound of something approaching made them stop struggling for a moment, their heart-rate picking up as it got closer. They dared a glance in that direction, knowing they were helpless to escape. A person. The relief was almost tangible.
âPlease helpâŚâ They called out as loud as they could- it came out hoarse and quiet, but apparently it was enough- whoever it was, they turned to look at them, then approached. It seemed like it was worth the risk, despite how unnerving he looked this close up- He looked down at them through a pair of dark-tinted glasses, a perfectly unreadable expression on his ash-smeared face. The skull of some unknown beast was strapped to his shoulder, and he held a heavy blade that clearly saw regular use.
After a long moment of mutual observation, the newcomer spoke.
âHere. Iâve got a spare cloak,â He crouched, setting the weapon down and taking the pack from his back to retrieve said article. âAre you hurt?â
âI⌠donât think so,â They replied haltingly. The words werenât coming to them easily, so they took them slowly. âThank you,â
âThatâs lucky,â
âWhere⌠where am I?â
âWeâre at whatâs left of Black Creek⌠Donât worry about that now. Iâm going to take you to the Bullmar outpost, youâll be safe there,â He unrolled the cloak, deftly draping it over their shoulders. âCan you stand?â
âN-no,â They could hardly feel their legs, let alone use them.
âAlright. It isnât safe here; Iâll help you along as best I can, but itâs a few miles away,â Their rescuer spoke calmly, quietly, ducking under their arm and helping them to their feet. Unsteady, yes, but they managed to stay upright with the support of this strange man. Heâs a little shorter than me. They noted absently, somewhat glad of it as that made him easier to lean on comfortably. He patiently aided them onward, into the deep shadows of the surrounding forest.

âItâs⌠Emmett,â Emmett replied; that felt right.
âEmmett. Alright,â Abernathy nodded, leading them onward. âWell, for what itâs worth, I hope Bullmar will be a place of refuge for you. Youâre going to need one,â

Second, Iâm changing up the posting schedule/content for this blog. Iâve been priming for this for a while now. Instead of simply posting excerpts from things Iâm working on or quick vignettes, Iâm setting up an episodic story specifically to work on for weekly posting to this blog and my other writing blog (Maybe also to Wattpad. Weâll see.) I hope to post every week on Saturdays. Itâll be quite a bit more polished than most of the things Iâve posted here thus far, and will give this blog a bit more direction, I think.Â

iâve been doing my homework on how to break into a writing career and honestly. thereâs a Lot that i didnât know about thats critical to a writing career in this day and age, and on the one hand, its understandable because weâre experiencing a massive cultural shift, but on the other hand, writers who do not have formal training in school or donât have the connections to learn more via social osmosis end up extremely out of loop and working at a disadvantage.Â
like, i didnt know about twitter pitch parties!! i didnt know about literary agents and publishers tweeting their manuscript wishlist, in hopes that some poor soul out there has written the book they really want to read and publish!! this isnt some shit you learn about in school! you really need to know the ins and outs of the writing community to be successful!Â
for anyone interested, hereâs what iâve learned so far in my quest for more writing knowledge:
1. Writerâs Market 2019 is a great place to startâ it gives you a list of magazines and journals that you can send your work to depending on the genre as well as lists a shit ton of literary agents that specify what genres they represent, how you can get in contact with them and how they accept query letters. this is a book that updates every year and tbh i only bought it this year so i dont know how critical it is to have an updated version Â
2. do your research. mostly on literary agents because if you listed on your site that you like to represent fluffy YA novels and some asshole sends you a 80k manuscript about likeâŚgritty viking culture, you will be severely pissed off. always go in finding someone who you know will actually like your work because theyâre the ones who will try to advocate for you in getting published.
3. learn how to write a query letter. there are slightly varying formulas to how you can write an effective query letter. youâre also going to want to get feedback on your query letter because its the first thing the literary agent will read and based on how well you do it, it could be the difference between them rejecting you outright and giving your manuscript a quick read
4. unfortunately, youâre gonna want to get a twitter. Twitter is where a lot of literary agents are nowadays, and they host things like twitter pitch parties, where you pitch your manuscript in a few sentences and hashtag it with #Pitmad #Pitdark, some version of pit. a lot of literary agents and publishers will ALSO post their manuscript wishlists, which is just the kind of books theyâd like to represent/publish, and they hashtag this with #MSWL (it is NOT for writers to use, only for agents/publishers)
5. connect with other writers, literary agents, publishers at book events. you will absolutely need the connections if you want to get ahead as a writer. thats just kind of the state of the world.

He stepped through, finding himself in a small, wooded area- thankfully, in a clearing that wouldn't set the whole thing on fire as he left, the portal self-extinguishing as he stepped out of it. "I'm going to kill him," Gai sighed as soon as he got out of the little wood, finding some sort of human settlement in front of him. While just as absurd, the way they looked was certainly distinct from his own cotton shirt and canvas pants. "Mm, but I suppose it won't hurt to look around a bit more, anyway," He murmured to himself, squaring his broad shoulders and stepping out into the bright sunlight, the light breeze ruffling his long hair. He tried to act natural- difficult, since he hadn't talked to a human in well over six hundred years.
