Relationship Questions [ still accepting ]
Though they didn’t get a lot of relationship exploration in game, I think Doug and Katjaa’s friendship is criminally underappreciated and unnoticed. Though we really only got to see two major instances of them expressing fondness or concern for each other, what we did get speaks volumes about the extent of their relationship.
Like how when they were fleeing the Inn after the bandit raid, the first thing Doug does is ask if Katjaa’s alright -- then later after the unspeakable event happens, Katjaa mentions how much she liked him and that he’d spent time in Belgium. Like, we/Lee didn’t even know that, so they obviously talked a lot and built up a pretty close relationship during the months they’d known each other.
But what we didn’t get to see in canon, there’s always headcanon to fill in the blanks -- which segues intooo...
It’s long been a headcanon of mine that because Doug most likely has knowledge of Dutch ( and French ), he and Katjaa sometimes have conversations in that language. Usually when they do it’s to keep the language alive in their memories, other times it’s to gossip or vent without anyone eavesdropping.
Katjaa’s the only other person aside from Lee that Doug feels comfortable confiding his feelings and thoughts to, and in return he’s always willing to lend an ear to her should she need to get something off her chest -- especially if it’s something concerning her family or something Kenny would start a spat over.
Sometimes if he gets into one of his food-related stupors ( see: keeping Mark awake all night listing types of pie ) he’ll ask Katjaa to describe Belgian dishes and judge them based on if he’d eat them or not. Since he’s pretty picky, a lot of them get the thumbs-down.“ Peaches... and... tuna? Are you guys okay over there? ”
As an extension to Katjaa, Doug does his best to keep Duck in high spirits ( though Duck tends to take care of that on his own ) and watch out for him should she or Kenny be occupied with something else. He doesn’t hover or anything, just glances over to see what he’s up to now and again. If he catches him doing something funny, mischievous, or otherwise noteworthy, he’ll relay the events to Katjaa later.
Those are just a few specific things I can see happening between them. :P But goodness I really do wish their friendship got expanded on or even seen a little more in canon -- something like them just having a conversation in the background or exchanging glances here and there or something. But I would have liked more of those two in the game in general, so I'm definitely grateful for what we did get.-- ]
