It seems like ever since Child’s Play, filmmakers don’t know how to do “scary doll” without going completely overboard into the realm of absurdity.

I love dolls. I love all kinds of dolls, and I’ve seen all kinds of dolls. My mother has a collection of antique dolls from around the world, and I’ve otherwise seen more than my fair share of “creepy” antique dolls. However, real antique dolls–even the creepiest ones–do not look like the fuckin’ things that modern horror movies are trying to sell you, especially not dolls that are supposed to resemble children. The closest you’ll find to something like the abominations on the right is Letta, and it’s highly doubtful that Letta was intended to be a figure of a child.

I don’t know why this bothers me, but it just does. The people who designed these movie dolls were either trying way too hard, or not trying at all.

My best guess, at least in Annabelle the Doll’s case, as to why these design choices happen is that filmmakers don’t think anybody would find a Raggedy Ann doll scary, which we all know is bullshit. In the right hands, a horror movie can make you scared of Raggedy Ann.

Sadly, people are still afraid of Raggedy Ann now, when they find out about the “real” Annabelle. I’ve had more than one coworker say so (both have since become less afraid after seeing Ann dolls firsthand in the store).

Raggedy Ann is sweet and loveable, and doesn’t deserve this.

I have my own little Ann and Andy, and they’ve been nothing but precious and adorable.

The pants pattern is ready to share, because of Mattel being predatory of their trademarks, both words and photos of their dolls, being used in fanmade product listings, I have labeled the pattern as "Creepy Class" and have used nicknames to describe the different fits since there are at least five different body types currently.

I mean, even though I do like how it turned out, this is REALLY bad. It's the worst printing error I've ever seen and I've got a Fierce Rockers Clawdeen where her crescent makeup is smear across her face.

How do y'all tell yhe difference between hair types? I know Cleo and Frankie have The Bad Hair, but I've heard mixed reports on the others and I just don't know how to tell and it's so frustrating.

I can usually tell by touching it but it honestly took me a while to be able to feel what poly hair is and sometimes I confuse very low quality nylon with poly, still.

Polypropylene is a fine fiber that feels unpleasantly dry and kind of crispy. It’s the most plastic-feeling hair fiber to me out of all of them.

I think G3 looks nice and the design team knows what they’re doing but still I don’t want to buy any.

Everyone talks about how Ghoulia is autistic but I think Abbey is as well! I’ve never seen her stated to be such, but here’s a video pointing out some moments. I understand she’s from the Himalayas and it’s a culture difference but as a kid the subtle hints were important for me. When I was younger my parents were in denial of my autism so they never told me. But when I found the webisodes of Abbey I found one of my first comfort characters. As an autistic kid who never understood small talk, was very dependent on rules/routines, made verbal observations that came off as “hurtful” and struggled with feeling I belonged; these little additions to her character made me feel less alone. It may be accidental and it may not fit everyone’s experience but I’ve always seen Abbey as a person (or yeti) with autism. I just thought I’d share this since I haven’t seen it spoken about before 🖤

Abbey has always been my favorite for similar reasons. I think her approach to dating especially got me, since that's the way I always was. Like, reading cues? Subtle hints? Nah man I'm just gonna say exactly what I'm feeling and they can say yes or no, skip that weird social courtship that I do not understand.
