He draws the other wolf into his chest - personal space be damned - and rocks him gently, soothing him the best he can, one hand running up and down along his arm to try and create warmth. “I’ll explain soon. Just- You need to shift. Now-” His eyes glint red, the last part is an order.

He doesn’t like the way the wolf’s muscles seize with each breath, the way his chest hollows as if he can’t get enough air - he wonders if that’s how he’d been, too. It’s awful to watch, but he knows from experience that’s it’s even worse to endure.

“Shift." His demand comes out gentler this time, "Trust me."

Shift. Avery could do that. He had to consciously stop himself shifting most of the time, actually choosing to let the wolf out would be easy. The fact he could shift was enough of a prompt for the change.

The claws came out, eyes flashing to gold and it had an immediate effect. Warmth started to spread through his body again, his shivers calming, and he breathed deeply.

Now with his head clearing he finally took proper notice of his companion. Scott McCall, Allison had mentioned him. He'd been avoiding the alpha as much as he could, trying to stay to himself and out of the way of any drama that come with knowing other werewolves. His first instinct was to run, to get up and damn his weakness in that moment. But he didn't, instead voicing one of his many questions. "What just happened?"

Avery's father had wanted his kids raised as hunters, knowing from the start of werewolves and other monsters so it'd become second-nature to them. His mother disagreed though, arguing that she'd picked up hunting quickly after she found out about it, and that the kid's would be fine without their childhood's ruined.

The plan was when they were fifteen they'd start to train. It didn't work for either child though, Casey finding out when she was eleven, and Avery finding out when he was thirteen. Despite not being raised as hunters, their parents did influence them into certain habits. Both grew up naturally curious and with a taste for searching out the truth, they would eventually always figure out the truth, or at least, notice something was up. They knew how to survive in the wild if it came down to it, and were trained self-defense so they knew how to fight.
