it  didn't  matter  how  big  a  group  had  gotten  in  the  mainstream  music  industry.  all  were  welcome  at  the  hellfire  festival  in  downtown  indianapolis  bi-annually  each  year.  steve  remembered  when  his  band  started  out  there  his  senior  year  of  high  school.  it  started  out  as  just  something  to  do,  but  then  they  got  signed  and  the  meteoric  skyrocket  to  world  tours  and  studio  albums  snowballed  from  there.  his  face  was  printed  on  international  magazines,  and  he  wore  his  sunglasses  while  being  interviewed  for  the  cover  of  rolling  stone  magazine.  it  was  surreal.  nothing  quite  brought  him  back  down  to  earth  than  returning  to  the  festival.  on  equal  ground  with  local  garage  bands  and  other  rival  bands  who  signed  up  to  headline  the  show. 

hard  to  believe  that  just  down  the  road  was  his  small  town  roots,  close  enough  in  the  rearview  to  scare  the  shit  out  of  him.  because  as  his  managers  and  agents  weren't  shy  to  remind  the  big-headed  rockstar,  it  could  all  be  gone  just  like  that.  the  tensions  in  the  group  were  high,  and  just  because  they  were  playing  at  a  sure  thing  festival,  it  didn't  mean  they  could  be  right  back  where  they  started  if  the  performance  didn't  go  well.  tabloids  had  smeared  harrington's  name  and  made  up  stories  about  his  going  solo  for  the  past  few  months.  his  bandmates  were  already  giving  him  death  glares.  if  the  fans  didn't  turn  out  to  support  them…  the  clock  was  winding  down  on  steve's  rising  star.  sunglasses  fixed  on  his  face,  he  stepped  over  to  the  crafty  table  backstage  without  much  regard  for  his  surroundings.  he  was  avoiding  his  bandmates,  the  press,  and  he  didn't  notice  a  pair  of  drumsticks  sliding  across  the  floor  right  into  his  line  of  path.  he  stumbled  and  caught  himself  on  the  edge  of  the  snack  table. 

once  recovered,  he  bent  down  to  pick  up  the  sticks  and  hold  them  out  to  the  nearest  person  assuming  they  were  the  owner  in  question.  “  i  think  you  dropped  something,  man.  you  ought  to  keep  a  better  eye  on  these.  a  pair  of  drumsticks  around  here  could  disappear  like  hotcakes.  i've  lost  one  or  two  favorite  picks  at  this  festival  more  times  than  i  could  count.  ”  steve  moved  his  sunglasses  to  the  top  of  his  head  and  got  a  better  look  at  the  musician.  he  was  good  looking.  a  bit  too  hot  to  be  a  drummer,  stuck  at  the  back  of  the  stage  while  raging  over  his  kit.  too  bad  he  didn't  pick  up  a  lead  guitar  or,  hell,  even  the  front  man.  those  blue  eyes  would  kill  a  crowd  in  a  hot  second.  “  i  don't  think  i  know  you,  do  i?  ”  he  tried  not  to  pay  to  much  attention  to  the  up  and  comers.  his  team  had  a  way  of  pitting  the  bands  against  each  other  to  produce  a  creative  rivalry  and  push  the  group  to  do  better  with  the  next  album  release.  brown  eyes  level  a  study  down  the  blonde's  body.  he  had  the  look  down  alright,  but  the  real  question  was,  was  his  band  worth  a  shit?

Max  froze  when  her  eyes  landed  on  him.  Blinked  a  few  times,  like  if  she  just  cleared  her  vision  he'd  morph  into  someone  else.  No  such  luck.  Standing  there  in  the  Sears,  apparently  her  new  studio  manager,  was  Steve  goddamn  Harrington,  charming  the  hell  out  of  some  mom  and  her  two  kids.  She  took  a  breath,  stealing  herself.  Forced  herself  to  finish  walking  through  the  doors,  avoiding  looking  him  in  the  eye.  Maybe  he  wouldn't  remember  her.  If  she  was  really,  really  lucky.  She  kept  her  head  down,  started  putting  her  things  away  behind  the  counter,  eyes  on  her  camera,  fiddling  with  it  as  the  family  left  and  he  approached.  "...Hey."

the  ladder  at  family  video  only  went  up  so  many  levels  before  he  was  hitting  his  head  on  the  cardboard  cutout  ceiling  of  the  latest  summer  releases.  earning  enough  money  for  gas  to  drive  the  kids  and  robin  around  hawkins  was  all  well  and  good  until  he  had  to  start  making  rent  on  his  studio  apartment.  the  cost  of  living  might  have  been  lower  than  indianapolis,  but  he  was  growing  tired  of  relying  on  pb  &  j  sandwiches  for  breakfast,  lunch  and  dinner.  his  thirties  were  a  new  and  strange  era.  he  needed  a  job  position  that  matched.  holding  down  the  fort  at  the  video  rental  place  for  several,  steady  years  looked  good  on  his  resume.  good  enough  that  he  secured  a  management  position  at  the  new  sears.  jonathan  had  helped  him  study  up  on  the  latest  advancements  in  film  development  so  that  he'd  be  able  to  supervise  that  department  without  looking  like  a  complete  dope. 

the  problem  was  finding  someone  to  actually  take  the  pictures  and  develop  the  film.  steve's  first  order  of  business  for  the  past  two  weeks  was  filing  through  a  stack  of  applicants.  there  wasn't  a  short  supply  of  interest  in  the  job  of  photographer.  the  issue  lie  in  finding  someone  who  wasn't  lying  through  their  teeth  about  the  skill  level.  he  didn't  immediately  recognize  @normaltothemax's  name  on  the  form,  but  he  was  excited  and  encouraged  when  she  scribbled  under  the  extra  notes  section  that  she  owned  her  own  camera.  the  store  provided  equipment,  of  course,  but  it  had  to  be  a  good  sign  that  she  knew  a  thing  or  two  if  she  owned  her  own.  steve  left  it  with  his  secretary  to  set  up  an  interview  and  invite  max  in  for  a  trial  period.  he  wanted  to  see  how  she  did  with  the  customers  before  officially  offering  the  position. 

when  he  turned  away  from  a  potential  client  and  her  kids  to  greet  max,  he  noticed  her  frozen  terror  with  mild  interest.  he  looked  down  at  his  white  button  up  shirt  and  tie.  he'd  left  his  jacket  back  in  his  office.  was  there  a  stain?  did  he  have  the  badge  labeling  him  studio  manager  backwards?  steve  made  all  the  subtle  adjustments  before  approaching  her  with  his  hand  outstretched.  “  hi!  i'm  steve  harrington.  please,  call  me  steve.  uh,  so  i  got  a  few  things  set  up  here.  tripod,  backdrops.  we  can  change  those  out  depending  on  what  your  artistic  vision  is  for  the  models.  ”  he  chuckled  lightly  and  slipped  his  hands  into  his  slack  pockets.  there  was  a  roll  of  mints  he'd  forgotten  about  tucked  inside,  so  he  brought  the  cylinder  out  and  offered  max  one.  “  winter  fresh?  ”
