it  was  happening  again.  every  morning  for  a  full  week  now,  steve  would  get  up  in  the  morning  to  find  certain  things  out  of  place.  (  which  was  odd  enough  when  he  had  only  just  moved  in,  and  he  hadn't  gotten  around  to  unpacking  everything  just  yet.  boxes  lined  the  walls  of  his  living  room  area.  his  toothbrush  made  its  home  by  the  kitchen  sink  instead  of  making  the  trek  upstairs  to  be  by  the  bathroom  sink  where  it  belonged  all  along.  )  even  with  these  curiosities  that  steve  himself  was  solely  responsible,  he  noticed  other  details  that  didn't  carry  his  signature.  for  instance,  the  meager  groceries  he'd  purchased  from  the  general  store  in  town  were  already  low  despite  him  only  bringing  them  back  only  a  couple  of  days  ago.  his  television  remote  had  begun  a  habit  of  sitting  on  the  armchair  when  he  remembered  damn  well  placing  it  on  the  side  table  by  the  sofa. 

this  morning,  steve  set  an  alarm.  he  woke  up  a  full  hour  before  he  had  to  get  up  to  go  to  work  just  to  see  if  he  could  catch  his  PHANTOM  in  the  act.  creeping  down  the  stairs,  his  hand  followed  the  banister  until  he  reached  it's  loose  block  on  the  newell  post  at  the  bottom.  the  block  flung  itself  to  the  ground  with  a  terrible  crash.  steve  scrambled  after  it  to  prevent  his  presence  being  known.  once  he'd  restored  it  to  its  natural  place  on  the  stair's  handrail,  he  listened.  he  listened  some  more.  nothing.  he  walked  slowly  to  the  kitchen  sink  and  turned  on  the  faucet.  steve  grabbed  his  toothpaste  and  toothbrush  and  set  to  the  task  of  cleaning  his  teeth  as  his  coffeepot  automatically  started  to  brew.  after  a  while,  he  rinsed  his  brush,  set  it  in  a  cup,  and  patted  his  mouth  dry  with  a  dishcloth. 

the  remote!  steve  broke  out  into  a  sprint  just  as  his  pot  dinged  digitally,  announcing  his  coffee  was  ready  to  serve.  he  couldn't  pay  any  attention  to  that  now.  he  had  to  know  where  the  remote  was!  whipping  his  head  back  and  forth  from  the  side  table  to  the  armchair,  he  didn't  immediately  find  the  device.  the  television  was  on  and  displayed  a  static  channel.  taking  a  few  steps  further  into  the  room,  steve's  eyes  landed  on  the  little  square  remote.  it  was  on  the  floor,  between  the  armchair  and  the  tv  set.  steve  broke  out  into  a  run  towards  the  back  door.  as  soon  as  he  rounded  the  corner  into  the  utility  room,  his  mouth  dropped  open.  the  door  was  cracked  a  half  inch  and  there  was  a  trail  of  dirt  leading  a  path  between  the  entrance  and  throughout  the  partial  space.  like  a  zombie,  steve  approached  his  open  back  door.  he  followed  the  course  to  the  only  other  place  someone  could  hide  in  his  yard—  the  garden  shed. 

the  lance  had  splintered  in  the  heat  of  his  last  tournament  and  scratched  his  bicep  rather  deep.  the  injury  usually  healed  within  the  hour  as  if  the  affliction  had  never  occurred  in  the  first  place,  but  being  estranged  from  his  fae  homeland,  prince  steffen's  powers  were  not  what  they  once  were  kept  within  the  confines  of  his  ivory  tower.  behind  the  vale  which  hid  his  world  from  that  of  mortals,  his  connection  to  the  ancestors  who  came  before  not  only  protected  him  but  filled  him  with  glorious  youth,  boundless  healing  and  eternal  life.  outside  of  that  comfort,  steffen  was  weakened.  more  or  less  due  to  the  petty  disagreement  between  his  free  will  and  that  of  his  king  and  queen  who  would  have  him  wed  his  enemy. 

STUBBORN  and  on  the  run  from  the  royal  guard  who  would  drag  him  back  to  the  fae  realm,  steffen  traveled  with  knights  under  the  alias  FINN.  hidden  well  enough  between  other  armored  bodies,  the  prince  realized  his  luck  would  soon  run  out.  likely  too,  he'd  be  banned  from  competing  much  longer  if  his  injuries  no  longer  healed  themselves.  a  bandaged  wrapped  his  arm  at  present,  and  the  fae  had  to  pay  attention  to  the  human  warriors  surrounding  him  to  know  how  to  tend  the  mortal  hinderance.  that  night,  they'd  taken  refuge  in  a  local  tavern.  it  was  lively  with  music  and  drink.  the  livestock  was  traded  through  nearby  farmers,  so  a  roasted  meant  was  spinning  over  the  great  fire  at  the  back  of  the  communal  area. 

what  NEED  did  the  fae  prince  have  for  grandeur  when  the  company  was  this  homely  and  natural?  leaning  back  in  a  simple  wooden  chair  with  ale  in  hand,  he  didn't  miss  the  feather  cushions  of  the  palace  or  the  simple  harp  music  that  filled  its  halls.  the  smell  of  sweat  and  earth  and  cooked  meat  and  wheaty  grain  alcohol  filled  every  corner.  prince  steffen  would  have  no  alternative.  a  commotion  broke  out  in  the  corner  of  the  tavern.  heads  drew  in  that  direction,  but  no  one  moved  to  investigate  the  disturbance.  fights  were  typical  and  usually  nothing  more  than  a  disagreement  in  who  won  the  last  round  of  cards.  the  shouts  grew  more  fevered,  and  steffen  rose  to  find  out  for  himself  what  the  fuss  was  about.  ❝  pray,  move  it  outside,  fellows!  the  rest  of  us  are  trying  to  ENJOY  the  evening.  ❞

dottie  imbued  steve  with  a  calming  presence  in  the  past.  when  he  saw  it  was  her  at  his  door,  he  was  not  expecting  to  open  the  floodgates  to  a  whirlwind  of  determination  and  no  small  measure  of  TOUGH  LOVE.  the  evidence  of  her  efforts  in  the  form  of  posters  and  buttons  for  his  imaginary  campaign  was  a  shock  to  his  system.  it  woke  him  up  more  effectively  than  any  cup  of  coffee  or  bucket  of  ice  cold  water  over  the  head.  ❝  wait,  wait—whoa  whoa  WHOA!  WHAT?!  ❞  it  was  like  he  was  hearing  everything  she  said  in  reverse.  he  backed  up  to  let  her  in  because  she  was  welcome,  and  it  was  the  polite  thing  to  do.  eyes  still  transfixed  on  her  mock  ups,  steve  began  to  shake  his  head  in  a  daze.  what  he  said?  WHAT  had  he  said  again?

oh,  yeah.  THE  TRUTH.  hawkins  was  no  better  off  then  it  had  been  weeks  after  the  town  split.  excuses  of  budget  cuts  and  lack  of  volunteers  or  construction  professionals  didn't  sound  so  great  years  after  the  fact.  steve  wanted  something  done,  and  the  best  way  to  do  that  was  to  roll  up  your  sleeves  and  get  to  work!  crap,  he  kinda  made  a  whole  thing  of  it,  didn't  he…?  good  goddamn  idea.  REALLY?  shit,  he  guessed  it  was,  maybe.  but  him?  steve  had  been  some  illusion  of  a  leader  before  in  his  time,  but  mostly,  he  was  good  with  the  support.  he  was  a  steady  hand  whenever  anyone  wanted  to  reach  out  to  grab  it.  did  he  really  have  what  it  took  to…  lead  the  town?  finally,  his  brain  caught  up  with  the  first  thing  she  told  him:  i'm  not  letting  you  drop  out.  it  was  SCARY.  full  of  responsibility  and  a  tiny  bit  of  threat.  steve  gulped  and  closed  the  door  behind  her. 

❝  can  i  get  you  anything?  can  i  talk  you  out  of  all  this?  ❞  he  wanted  to  explain  how  it  all  was  a  mistake.  he'd  gotten  carried  away.  okay,  so  maybe  it  wasn't  a  MISTAKE.  the  issues  were  real,  but  he  was  an  IDIOT  if  he  thought  he  was  the  man  for  the  job.  he  would  help,  he  would  volunteer  countless  hours  to  reconstruction  and  bake  sales  to  raise  the  money,  but  to  run  for  mayor?  it  was  funny,  right?  ❝  dottie…  ❞  he  croaked  out.  he  might  as  well  have  been  starved  for  water  after  spending  miles  and  miles  treaking  lonely  desert.  ❝  c'mon.  you  can't  be  serious  about  this.  ❞  his  hands  were  on  his  hips,  his  fingers  tangled  up  in  the  band  of  his  bathrobe.  he  was  not  the  guy.

when  it  was  QUIET  like  the  center  of  his  cruel  court  surrounded  by  other  popular  teens  or  at  night  when  steve  was  trying  to  drift  into  restless  sleep,  steve  thought  about  when  he  used  to  be  friends  with  the  METALHEAD.  these  thoughts  were  met  by  a  ringing  hollow  feeling—a  part  missing  from  him.  the  wound  of  which  still  itched  from  slow  healing;  perhaps,  a  festering  gouge  that  would  never  fully  close  up  as  it  should.  shame,  shame,  shame.  a  regret  he  wanted  to  take  upon  himself  as  a  weighed  blanket  meant  to  cement  him  in  his  place.  the  place  he  was  born  to.  something  else  lingered  around  the  edges.  a  notion  that  he  didn't  have  to  stay.  what  stopped  him  from  mending  that  fence?

young  steve's  eyes  widened  when  eddie  stood  up  for  himself.  so  used  to  submission  and  cajoling  from  his  small  group  of  buddies  too  afraid  to  upset  a  harrington,  steve  immediately  grinned  from  EAR  TO  EAR  at  his  challenge  being  met  levelly.  ❝  well  alright!  let's  go  then.  ❞  steve  didn't  pull  on  him  this  time.  he  trusted  the  new  kid  would  follow.  the  heir  harrington  blended  into  the  line  formed  away  from  the  ferris  wheel.  clouds  of  cotton  candy  passed  by  and  giant  stuffed  animals  from  the  carnival  games.  the  noise  had  melted  into  a  dull  squall  while  steve  focused  on  the  mission  at  hand.  he  barely  registered  eddie's  confession.  when  he  did,  his  head  swiveled  back  to  him  with  his  eyebrows  crinkled  above  narrowing  brown  eyes. 

how  could  he  put  on  such  a  brave  front  only  to  deflate  it  a  little  with  a  whisper  of  truth?  steve  lied  about  as  much  as  fifteen  times  a  day,  at  least…  most  of  them  were  to  support  any  act  he  was  trying  to  establish  among  his  audience.  some  were  for  his  dad  so  that  he  didn't  get  a-talking-to.  some  were  for  himself.  an  invisible  string  pulled  the  tension  from  his  face.  his  small  fingers  plucked  at  a  loose  thread  at  the  hem  of  his  polo  shirt.  ❝  it's  okay.  i  haven't  either.  ❞  he  admitted,  then  slowly  he  looked  back  to  eddie's  face.  his  wonder  returned  in  a  burst  of  energy.  ❝ it'll  be  our  first  time,  together!  that's  even  better.  ❞
