Chapter 6
A Summer Breeze for the Raining November
7/23/2074 â 1:23
Syndicate HQ â Pacific Branch, Seattle
November stared at Octoberâs slowly paling body as it rested upon the surgical table that was connected to a powerless life-support machine.
âWhen the blackout hit-âThe doctor was cut off from trying to justify the situationâŚor at least explaining it.
âJust give me a moment. You should go prep the injured and get them ready for takeoff. The hangar isnât too far away but once me and January get in there, we wonât have much time until the entire base full of ghouls comes running.
âAlright, Iâll see what I can do to help.â The doctor replied. November only knew his last name because of his nametag that read Lee.
The doctor walked out, leaving November alone with his thoughts and October, with the silence taking center stage.
Looking back on his time with October, he remembered two things that he had said to him.
âDonât worry man. Weâve both been here a while and Iâll watch your back just like youâve watched mine. If we do that then weâll be here for a while longer. Besides, look at all the rookies that have grown up because of us. Weâve gotta be doing something right?â
October said that when November had been shot for the first time. He had also led in a crew team, leaving only with a small fraction of that team. He had grappled with death and lost his arrogance, or as he would say, his edge, but October was around to reassure him.
The second thing November recalled October saying was what he said in response to Novemberâs reply.
âIâm just so ashamed of the fact that I was so scared of dying. It was terrifying.â It wasnât Novemberâs proudest moment, but the fact that October pulled him through that conversation and point in his life, was why November decided to recall this specific memory.
âIf youâre not afraid of dying then whatâs the point of living..?â Simple and stark were the words that October shared.
âWhat do you mean?â Asked a perplexed November.
âIt was the Greek Gods that were jealous of the mortals. Because when youâre mortal, and afraid of death, that is when life has meaning, things are beautiful and it is when you are driven to do great things. Finite existences reinforces the beauty of the ephemeral.
âThatâs poetic.â November said not knowing what exactly there was to respond to. âAnd look at you now! Youâre giving ME advice. I remember when you were a rookie yourself.â The two agents laughed together for a while and like that, Novemberâs memory ended. But what he also remembered made him smile a tragic smile. That was only days before his first cybernetic implant. What started the degradation of their closenessâŚsomething that November would fight harder for looking back, especially after Octoberâs death.
The door to the emergency room cracked open and January poked her head in.
âHey are you ready? Weâre getting ready to make our run over to the hangar.â
Januaryâs eyes were red, her hair was tossed and her cuts and bruises added to the dishevelment that made her beautiful. November knew that he had to reassure her that he was still there, that he was still alive, and still able to see things as a human can, not a machine. Only then would she feel safe.
Walking over November looked at January with stare of soft compassion. Confused, January took a step back but November grabbed her by the arm and pulled her in for a hug. His arms around her shoulders and hers reflexively around his ribs, the two embraced each other. January hesitated at first, but after a few seconds, she began to relish the moment and closed her eyes, letting her worries fade for just a moment. It was all she needed to pull herself together.
âAlright, are you ready?â November asked, looking down with a smile.
âDidnât I just ask you that question?â January said with a chuckle. She too could have cried at that moment, but she was sick of the emotion that had over taken everyone in the past few days. She was ready to go back to ânormalâ. Whatever that was for a syndicate soldier and agent.
âAlright everyone listen up.â November shouted. âThe communications and pretty much anything that could be used to signal help is out of commission because of the radiation that is starting to flood the base. Before that happens, or before the base collapses in on itself, or the ghouls get to us, we need to get the fuck out of here.â
âHow!?â Yelled an injured nurse who had a bandage wrapped around her head and her eye.
âAs soon as April gives us the green to go, a small team, consisting of myself, January, Doctor Lee and Officer Burns over here, are going to pave a way to the hangar. When that happens weâll radio to you guys in here and youâll move as quickly and quietly as possible to us, where weâll load you into one of the birds. Then hopefully itâll be a smooth flight.â
âAnywhere but here.â Replied Lees, while he loaded his Ares Predator heavy pistol.
âBefore we go, Iâd like you to know that I think youâre a fucking bad ass.â November said under his breath to the doctor who had demonstrated an attitude worthy of commendation.
âIs everyone okay with that plan?â yelled January who also loaded her gun.
With the sounds of consensus, the four members of the scouting team prepared themselves for what was to come.
âAlright guys, lets huddle in here for a second.â November said, motioning towards the three other people in his team. âThis is going to be tough, dark and scary. But if we just keep an eye out for each other, donât panic weâll be fine. You two need to just be an extra set of ears and eyes. These ghouls are a whole different level of deadly and you two donât have to do any heavy lifting. Just let us take care of that.â
âIâm okay with that. But donât count me out if there is a fight.â Said the young Syndicate officer named Jeremy Burns.
As they prepared to leave January whispered to November and asked him something that he wasnât quite sure how to answer.
âDo you think weâll actually be able to do any of the heavy lifting?â
âYeah just make sure you bend your knees.â Humor was all November could muster up at this point and with that January laughed but felt a bit uneasy.
As to the med bay opened, three of them looked back to encouraging whispers from those at the door controls. The fourth, November just simply equipped his forearm blade and walked out into the darkness.
âStay closeâŚâ Januaryâs voice was whispered and directed at Lee and Burns. The two quickly tightened their positioning while hurrying their pace.
The hallway was dank and it remained in utter darkness, but by now Novemberâs imagelink software had returned to full capabilities and he was using his night vision. January herself had night vision lenses while the other two were relying solely on what the other two told them was out there. They werenât allowed to turn on their flash lights until they were instructed to do so.
âI canât see shit!â Burns walked into another piece of low-hanging rubble, aggravating him further.
âGood, because even though they can see in the dark, theyâre drawn to light.â Said January.
âHave either of you fought a ghoul yet?â
âNo.â Lee and Burns just shrugged their shoulders.
âNeither have I.â January said admitting her stance on the situation.
âItâs fine, you can handle them. Just donât give into your fear and donât lose a grip on the situation.â November was leading the way, quietly maneuvering through the tricky terrain. He was surprised that he hadnât seen any ghouls yet. A few dead bodies, both ghoulish and human did however line the floor.
âHow much further?â Lee asked, growing impatient.
âJust around this turn, thereâll be a blast door and then-â
Gunshots were then heard, coming from a single gun. Then scurrying and fighting broke out, right around the aforementioned corner.
âShitâŚalright look alive guys.â Said November as he and January who was just cut off by the gunshots, darted around the corner to see a hallway that was actually somewhat lit by emergency lighting. In the wake of these lights, were a few dead ghouls. Then a flash came from behind them and the sounds of sword swings and flesh being flayed ran through the hallway.
Turning around, they caught a glimpse of June, standing in between two ghouls that had rushed him. His katana turned around and completely through one of the ghouls. The sword didnât kill it but it kept it at bay. However, the other ghoul had a knife through its head, courtesy of Juneâs other hand. Quickly tossing that ghoul down, June spun around and pulled out his revolver and blew off the head of the remaining one.
âJUNE!â Burns and Lee exclaimed as they finally turned the corner.
âOh shit, you guys are still alive. Thatâs awesome.â June was genuinely happy to see the two of them. But if that was happiness then what came next was indescribable.
âJuneâŚâ Said January, under her breath.
âJan? Holy shit itâs January! Oh my godâŚNOVEMBER!â June quickly sheathed and holstered his weapons before running over and embracing his two comrades.
âHoly fuck, how are you guys still alive? I thought you were goners for sure, from what I heard the bottom floor got fucked by the explosion.
âNah, we were by the med-bay, and November is wellâŚNovember so we managed to escape the worst of it.â January said happy as she had been since the ordeal had started.
âYeah, there are more of us too. April and a few other doctors and crewmen are back at the med-bay. We went into the hangar to go secure it and hopefully fly us out of here.â Replied November.
âNo shit, howâs April? She okay?â
The two agents merely looked away in response to the question.
âShe lost her leg. Sheâll be fine to pilot but, I donât know what really constitutes as fine right now.â Replied January.
âFuckâŚwell the hangar is secured for now. I just oversaw two Hawks take off filled to the brim with crewmen and other personnel.â
âOh shit, others survived? Any agents?â Replied January.
âNo, just crewmen. December, February and July are all K.I.A.â
âSo is March.â Replied a solemn November.
âFUCK! Whatâs happening to usâŚâ Said Chris, distraught and frustrated.
After a brief silence the team of remaining agents and combatants collected themselves, wondering what the next step was. They also began to wonder what Joshua was doing, where the ghouls were going and what they were supposed to do. Was Shaw in charge still?
âWhy didnât you take off with the two birds that flew out?â Asked November.
âFigured Iâd come back down and check for survivorsâŚglad I did now.â June said with a smile on his face.
âWow, thatâs heroism at its finest.â Said January.
âYeah, everything north of here has been evacuated. Youâre the last sector.â
âWhereâd everyone evacuate to?â Asked Lee.
âNot here, thatâs all I know.â
âAlright, well Lee, Burns, head back and tell the others to start moving to our location. Juneâs already been in there and the hangar canât be much worse than a few minutes ago. Weâll clear and hold.â Said a stern November.
November could feel it. Escape was just around the corner. But he was no stranger to disappointment and the feeling of a crestfallen defeat at the hands of nothing more than chance. For that reason alone he stayed vigilant.
The hiss of the hydraulic pumps was loud enough to startle November who was tense and ready for anything. But he remembered to be thankful for the doors being online and being a hardwire system, unaffected by the radiation in the area.
âAlright, thereâs a few ways to get in the hangar so thereâs no telling if any ghouls got in. Letâs be quick and quiet and hold a progressive 3-7m spread.â Said Chris, looking down the barrel of an H&K Mp5 equipped with a red-dot sight.
âRoger, and ready up.â Said November.
âReady!â replied the other two agents that flanked him on either side.
Moving in the hangar was somewhat illuminated thanks to the ceiling that was five hundred feet above them being wide open, letting in the moonlight. Fanning out, the group quickly and quietly came across straggling ghouls that were sniffing out the space.
Calling out the locations of ghouls, it was either a silenced shot fired by Chris, a throwing knife by January or a slash by November that took them down.
âOn your left.â Whispered November.
âRoger.â Replied January who threw her curved kunai through a ghoulâs skull.
Just like that, the hangar was clear of the straggling ghouls. Or so thought January as a ghoul approached from the shadows, ready to kill her. If it had been an outer one then she mightâve actually been in danger, but thanks to its frail skeleton and slow moving body, as well as Juneâs awareness, it didnât last too long.
As the ghoul dropped to its knees, June tossed a smile over to his fellow agent.
âThatâs how itâs done.â
âFuck you.â Replied a good natured January.
âAlright, letâs stay focused. We have a few birds here including Aprilâs T-Raider. Letâs load the injured on that and they can get to an evac zone or something while we try and counter attack.â Said November who stood, basking in the moonlight.
âCounter attack? With what? The Syndicate is finishedâŚfor us at least. The other branches arenât going to take us in. Weâre doneâŚunemployed.â Replied June.
âTrue. But Joshua is going to die for what heâs done.â
âYeah, thatâs a good idea and all, but I think for now, we should consolidate our forces. Try and establish a team of people who are still willing to fight, and then go after Joshua that way.â
âHeâs right November. Nowâs not the time to attack. Nowâs the time to try and stay alive.â January put her hand on Novemberâs arm, trying to calm him down as she could tell that his temper was about to flair.
But before they could argue about the plans that they were going to employ a sudden loud âtingâ sound rang through the hangar. The sound of metal on metal.
âCounter attack! Donât make me laugh.â The words shot through the dark, followed by a certain hysterical and maniacal laughter that set November off.
As the trio turned around, they saw two man standing on a catwalk near one of the aircrafts in the hangar. One, adorned in black robes and a blindfold, along with a pale complexion that was appropriately haunting given the vibrancy of the moonlight, and the other had black combat armor with a few feathers lacing the shoulder plating and hood.
âWho the fuck are these guys?â January said out of anger, brought on by their imposition.
âDead Sea, itâs a pleasure to meet youâ
ââŚand Iâm Caspian. Weâll be the ones to finish what Joshua started.â
âHow did you guys get in here!?â Yelled November, trying to figure out how Joshua managed to destroy the Syndicate and import in a small army and his two best generals.
âThe Stone does great things.â Replied Dead Sea who walked down a set of stairs that screeched while he ran his cleaver down the railing. âIâll tell you what. You get past us. You get to live. Weâll let you leave and make a claim for revenge.â
âBut if you canât, well I guess itâs obvious what happens then.â Added Caspian who whipped his arms in a tight circle to tighten the loose robes he had, around his forearms.
The trio each gripped their weapons, with the exception of June who dropped his gun in favor for his magically enhanced Katana.
âYou know the three of us havenât fought in over a year? Iâm ready to go back to that time we spent in the Congo last winter.â Said a smiling June.
âHoly shit, I guess youâre right. Itâll be good to bring back the Triad.â Said January who was also a blade user, when she wasnât using her hand gun or her throwing knives.
âWOW! Caspian look! Swordsmen, Iâm so lucky. Now aâ days, people rely on guns far too much and makes things too quick. Iâve been so lucky lately. First that fight with Hearts and Seonne, and now this fight with these lovely people.â
âShut up and just donât lose sight of the fact that Joshua wants them dead. If they escape youâre fucked, not me.â Caspian said as he raised his hands to prepare a powerful spell. June could feel it, and only June for he was the only one who was magically in tune whereas Jan and November were cybernetically enhanced.
âYou can tell your leader, after weâve left this place that when weâre readyâŚweâre going to come find him. I will personally watch the life leave his eyes, as I take everything he holds dear. If he has no family Iâll take you from him. If he doesnât care about you, then Iâll make him suffer more than any mortal with flesh and bone has ever suffered before.â The unusually silent November finally spoke up and from the heart. Something that was becoming more difficult with each passing minute he spent in this place. âHis last breath will be spent begging for an end and his last thought will be one of regretâŚone that regrets he ever fucked with ME!â November said as he looked up to meet Dead Seaâs eyes.
Usually Dead Sea would have been eager to retort, or to make things more dramatic. But he could sense that November wasnât a man to trifle with, to let his guard down with, or to toy with. He instead prepared himself for an onslaught brought to him b y Novemberâs rage. But instead of giving into his deepest desire for bloodshed, November instead retreated into the darkness of the room and vanished.
For the first time, Dead Sea was silent and Caspian picked up on this, wondering if what November said really got to him. It was probably more of the issue in how he said it. His diction was filled with hatred and a sense of believability.
âI guess, weâre going with that plan.â June said as he prepared his guard and met eyes with Caspian.
January didnât say anything, but instead worried for Novemberâs sake. She too faded into darkness, leaving June by himself in the center of the stage.
âGood talk guysâ said a sarcastic and stoic June, ready for any attack.
Starting things off, Caspian threw a wave of mana at June which was easily deflected by a ward shield that just dispersed the energy.
âA mage eh? This should be good. Youâre not the only whoâs going to have fun Sea.â Caspian said as he leapt down to meet Chris in battle.
Dead Sea was looking around, trying to find out where November or January was going to come from. At the edge of the catwalk he half expected November to creep up behind him and prepared himself for a quick turning strike.
But to his surprise November swung down from the rafters and kicked him down to the ground of the catwalk, while he rolled and darted back into the darkness.
âYou think youâll win by hiding?â
Again another attack, this time a slash of his forearm blade that was just barely blocked.
âDo it again motherfucker!â Sea yelled.
This time, instead of swinging right into the expectations of Dead Sea, November did what the enraged chaos warrior forgot to half expect.
Creeping up behind Dead Sea, November threw down a quick slash, that was met by Dead Seaâs last second block. His preternatural combat sense was all that saved him. But Novemberâs strength was enough to press down upon him. He was the only person Dead Sea had fought that had outmatched him in strength.
After a quick bout in a swordsmen arm wrestle, November threw a kick that knocked Dead Sea off the catwalk and onto the ground, where he landed flat on his back. Before November could land on him, dealing a deadly strike, Caspian intervened with a force spell that knocked the agent from mid-air and into a stack of boxes.
âCome on Sea! Get your shit together!â Caspian said before his arm was cleanly cut off by the blade of June. Before he had time to grasp his fresh wound, January had kicked him down to the ground and was ready to deal the final strike. Before she could however, Caspian had grabbed her foot and paralyzed her in fear and retreated to the rear of the hangar.
Perhaps the two chaos warriors had finally met a battle the two of them could not take on by just themselves. Maybe they would escape after all, or so Caspian thought as he took his severed arm and gruesomely âre-connectedâ it to his body.
âHow the fuck?â January asked out of disgust, but also breaking free of his paralyze spell that wasnât cast with a full strength.
âHeâs already a corpse. Heâs just possessing a dead body, so itâs easy to manipulate. Itâs like sticking the arm back on a puppet.â June gripped his Katana again. Looking over he saw Dead Sea and November engaged in a duel that was quick and powerful on both ends. He wasnât sure who would win.
The fight continued on for minutes, with magic being canceled out by magic between June and Caspian. Blade being canceled out by blade between November and Caspian and January intervening when she could to try and give her friends the upper hand.
Dead Sea found himself dodging thrust after thrust before he finally used his leaping ability to lift himself high enough to grab on the rafters and climb upon them. This gave him a minute to rest. Never had he ever been put to the edge by another person. Largely a single-handed effort by November.
If November got lucky, he mightâve actually won this bout. But as it remained, he had yet to be so.
âHiding wonât help you!â November yelled as his grapple carried him to the rafter top. As November found himself briefly suspended in the air, right in front of Dead Sea, he fired his other grappled at his opponent.
Luckily for Dead Sea he dodged the near point blank dodge by doing a tuck roll that was on a ledge about as wide as a support beam. His balance, key in his survival. However, unbeknownst to him, the dagger flew to the opposite wall. As November fell, the razor wire wrapped around the support beam, and carried November around in a circle and to the back of Dead Sea who wasnât expecting anything from the agent whom he thought had just fallen.
Again, luck was on Dead Seaâs side, as both arms were being used by November so he resorted to using a kick once more, that knocked the warrior off the beam and onto the ground. A thirty foot drop that shattered some bones in his arm, which was the first thing that made contact.
As Caspian watched this, he likely casted a spell that called for body resistance that saved Dead Seaâs arm from being totally crushed.
Breaking away from his duel with June, Caspian quickly picked up Dead Sea and began to run from the hangar.
Both of Joshuaâs assistants were astonished and appalled at their loss to these âhumansâ, even if they were the best in their fields of expertise.
As the two villains darted for one of the exits, November prepared his grapple in an effort to pursue his enemy. But before he could, January shouted up to him from the ground below.
âNovember donât! April and the others are here now and we need to leave.â
âLeave the revenge for later. You donât know what they have planned, this could be a trap. Letâs just get out of here!â Yelled June who got up slowly from a blow dealt to him by Caspian who was much craftier than he had expected.
Gritting his teeth, and realizing that he placed his priorities in his friends and comrades, rather than his own selfish desires, he recalled his grapple kunai and instead lowered himself to the ground where he met the limping April who had her arm around Doctor Lee.
âI got her.â Said November who scooped her up and placed her in one of the helicopters. âLoad the other one with the remaining injured and non-combatants. Everyone else board this one, weâre going to a Syndicate safe house. Injured are being flown to a Runnerâs hospital.
âWhatâs a runnerâs hospital?â Asked Lee.
âItâs a place where Shadow Runnerâs go to get patched up off record. After that, those who wish to stay can meet us at this location. If not, I understand and itâs been an honor to work with you.â November said, to those who were laying down on cots and sitting, with the help of another. Moans lined one of the transport helicopters while the agents gathered in the other helicopter that would be piloted by April.
âI think someone should go with the injured just in case.â June said, reloading his gun.â
âIâll go.â Lee said, reloading his as well.
âAlright, Iâll go then.â Replied January.
âNo I want you guys out of here and safe. The sooner you get to the safe house in Kirkland the sooner I get to rest that part of my mind. I donât want to lose another one of you guys. Take Burns with you and make sure you get to the house safe. Iâll take whoever is willing and meet you there tomorrow morning. Weâll lay low for a while and then weâll strike.â November said as he began to walk over to the other helicopter.
âWait!â April said, before November walked out of the chopper. âCome here.â
November walked over and sat in the co-pilots seat to see what his friend wanted. He was happy that he could still call her that after all that had happened, and the she wasnât with October.
âPlease, take care of yourself. Thanks for saving me back there, and even though I know that youâre not good with mushy stuff, nor is this the time for itâŚthank you for everything.â April said, still grimacing in pain. With that pain she still managed to hug her friend, before strapping herself into the cockpit.
âIâll always be there to pull you out April.â November said with a smile before walking towards the hull of the helicopter.
âSee you soon Novy. Donât run off without me again.â June said, referring to his month spent hunting Joshua. As November walked passed him, they met their fists and bumped them in respect for one another. The two of them were closer than even they realized.
Then, the momentary good-bye that November knew would hold a lot of weight. January.
âLook, please take car-â Before January could express worry, November grabbed her, picked her up and kissed her while holding her tightly. Even though his heart was broken, he knew that this was something he needed to do, for himself and for her. After everything he still knew three things. The first was that anything can change at any moment so cherish it while you can. The other was that he loved January and the third was that Joshua needed to pay and he would need her help for that.
As he set her down, she looked at him, brushed his cheek with her hand an bid him a farewell. It felt like they were saying good-bye forever, even though if the plan went accordingly, theyâd see each other in twenty four hours at most.
âIâll see you guys soon. Remember, get there and lay low.â November said as he boarded the other helicopter being piloted by a Jordi, a pilot he had met while ago.
âReady? Iâm closing the hatch.â Jordi said, as he prepared to flick the swich.
âWith one more wave, the two helicopters began their ascent away from this hell. The ghouls began to flood into the room because of the whirring of the loud helicopter blades, but it was too late. They had been left behind in the dust. Finally, November could rest.
He had also learned to be thankful for what he had. He had the injured safe, a few of his friends, including August and May and he also had himself.
Putting his head back on the head rest of the dark helicopter hull, he gave into the feeling of him feeling tired for the first time in what seemed like years. He hadnât been able to take a breath or a breather in ages and he knew that if there ever was a time to do so, now was the time.
Until his Commlink turned on and a transmission came to him. Opening it, his imagelink displayed the image of his most hated enemy. Joshua.
âEvening NovemberâŚleaving so soon?â
âJoshua!â November said as he startled everyone in the helicopter.
âWhy are you leaving? You know I canât let you leave? You know too much, along with all of your friends.â
âJoshua, if you do anything to hurt my friends more than you have youâll-â
âWhat? Regret it? I highly doubt that.â
âWhatever, weâre already gone. So fuck off. When I see you next, my hands will be around your filthy and vile neck.â
The crew members around him were trying to see what was wrong. Lee had his hand around Novemberâs back, trying to console him, not knowing that he was talking to the man he wanted to dismember.
âYou know I can still see you right? Two little birds flying in the night sky.â Joshua said with a voice most disturbing.
âWhy are you still talking to me? I have nothing more to say to you.â
âYou know why I did what I did?â
âI donât care, youâre going to die for it so I hope it was worth it.â
âI have no doubt that Iâll die because of my actions. But I did it to acquire this from the man you know as Ace.â Joshua said, as he held up the Stone in view of his camera lens. âThis is called the Stone of Garo.â
âI donât give a fuck what itâs called, Iâm gonna shove it up your ass soon.â
Joshua just laughed hard and with a manic demeanor. His eyes were piercing through his bandages. Crystal blue and filled with a sense of villainous idealism and a touch of insanity.
âThis Stone can do many interesting things. Itâs quite the artifact. It can let you control many worlds.â
âYou just donât know when to hang up do you?â November couldnât hang up, for Joshua had hacked into his Commlink, forcing him to endure this one sided conversation.
âYou wonder how I got those ghouls, Dead Sea and Caspian into your precious base, donât you? I also bet you wonder what it is that this Stone does. Well I can show you.â Joshua was looking into his wrist mounted Commlink, and as he held it up higher a glow engulfed him. âRemember how I said I wouldnât be able to let you leave?â
November squinted his eyes from the glare on his imagelink. He then began to consider that Joshua might actually have something further planned. But how, what was he doing? Then to the horror of November, the background on Joshuaâs end of the screen changed from the dark halls of the Syndicate facility, to the dimly light hull of the helicopter being piloted by April.
âWhatâs this? Novemberâs friends, but no November? Well donât worry, Iâll jump to you next so just sit tight.â Joshuaâs smile widened while Novemberâs mouth opened. What horrors were about to transpire and how? How did he do that? Was that all the work of the Stone? What could he do. Did he have to save his friends? How could he even. The helicopters were separated by several meters and were hovering high above the ground.
He could hear the shock and awe of those in the other helicopter. He could also see June stand up to challenge Joshua in hand to hand combat, along with January and Burns.
Burns was quickly dispatched while November could only look on in horror as those he just managed to save were being killed in front of him.
âNO!â Yelled November.
âWhatâs happening!â Yelled Lee who was frantic and standing.
âOpen the fucking hatch!â Yelled November.
âWhat?â Jordi was preoccupied with the erratic flight path of the other helicopter that was still on a similar flight pattern with his chopper.
âOpen the hatch! Hurry! Joshua is on the other chopper!â
âI donât-â Jordi just froze and was confused.
November walked over after shoving Lee back into his seat and punched the lever himself, opening the hull and exposing the underbelly of the flying beast to the ground below. The air left his lung and his stomach sank as he worried that he wouldnât get there in time. Burns had already been slaughtered on camera and Chris was slowly being burned by Joshua. January was nowhere to be seen from Joshuaâs wrist camera, but November had already begun to fear the worst.
The air was tossing his hair and his trench coat around. Looking over at the other helicopter, he lined up his shot and took the biggest risk in his life, never rehearsing this before.
Firing, his first grapple missed and he began to cry. Partially due to the wind but also because he felt helpless. But he mustered up his courage and fired the second which was true in its course and latched onto the helicopter hull. Not thinking out the next step, he flung himself over, flying through the air between the two choppers. Swinging like a low hanging pendulum and closer to the ground than he would have liked, his heart raced and broke at the same time at the prospect of him losing what he fought so hard to keep. His mind again was under attack from these hostile feelings. As the grappled pulled him to the helicopter, he landed on the underside with all fours. He had no way of reaching April as their commlinks were still out of whack and so there was no way for him to get her to open the bay doors on the helicopter.
âFUCK!â Yelled November, who just did what he could and the only thing that he knew he could do. His fellow crew members in the neighboring helicopter just looked out of the windows while November dangled.
Looking at his still running imagelink, he saw June being now mauled by a much more powerful Joshua. He didnât have much time. November needed to get in there NOW!
With his feet hanging below, and one arm on the frame of the helicopter and the other on the door itself, November overhauled his strength output and began to pry the door open. This jaw dropping strength surprised him, perhaps it was his desperation. As he managed to break the seal, he quickly placed his foot up on the ledge and pried the door open.
Screaming in pain, November began to do the impossible and open the door to the helicopter that was diving and rising given the chaos in the hull.
As he finally broke the door open wide again, his heart was torn out of his chest as Juneâs body fell out. Already lifeless and scarred with burns everywhere, June fell to the grounds below. One of his best friends, in the blink of an eye was dead. Just like the rest. All it took was one blink. One moment. One unexpected moment. But there was still January and April.
The crying November stood in the hull of the helicopter that was now glowing red with emergency lighting. At the other end, the crew section of the chopper stood Joshua, holding up January as his hand was thrust through her abdomen. The two of them facing the crestfallen November.
âIâm sorry I had to do this November. You may think Iâm crazy but I canât let anyone stop me now. Let alone someone like you, who doesnât even know what is about to happen to this world.â As Joshua said these words November was confused and shocked that he actually believed him for he wasnât the only one crying. Joshua too had tears rolling down his face. âIt brings me no joy in killing innocents and it doesnât bring me joy in killing those that are not foul in nature. Iâm sorry, I truly am.â Joshua said as he then began to glow green as a whole. January then fell to the ground with blood coming out of her mouth. She was mouthing something to November but he couldnât quite tell what it was. It drove him mad, he wished that everything would just stop. The screaming, the wind, the helicopter, because he just wanted to hear what she had to say. All he could make out was the word sorry. April herself was bleeding from the neck and slowly losing consciousness. But as Joshua discharged another blast of radiation, the helicopter fell dark and in the blink of an eye Joshua was gone and the aircraft was falling out of the sky.
Doing what the machine inside him told him to do, his right arm fired a grapple at a target line up by his targeting software that ironically came back online. The razor wire was fast being drawn out by the kunai that had sunk into something far away from the helicopter. He didnât have much time and so he ran over to January who was losing life quickly.
âJanuary, grab me! April take my hand.â
However, neither did so. Instead January just closed her eyes and April just turned and looked at him with a smile on her face. He couldnât hear her either but this time he could read out what she was saying. She was telling him to go.
Before he could reach for her and grab her hand he felt his elbow come out of its socket and the rest of his body begin to exit the chopper against his will. Before he left, he looked into Januaryâs nearly closed eyes as her mouth now said love one final time. This time he was sure that she was saying that she loved him. He wasnât worthy. He knew this as he flew out of the helicopter and slammed against the building he had grappled into. It was actually a smokestack that jutted out from ta factory facility in the industrial district. Tears were once again streaming down his face. He thought he had no more tears when he was at Octoberâs bedside, when he poured out his emotions t to January, or when October died, or when Joshua took what was left from him. But here he was. Crying once more. Uncontrollably. He wasnât worth the cyberware. The body he had. The friends he had. Anything. Not Januaryâs love, not Octoberâs friendship. He failed everyone in the worst way. As he hung there, the sound of a helicopter diving into the ground could be heard close by.
There was nothing left to November. His eyes were puffy like clouds and his cheeks were wet with rain drops.
Detaching his grapple, he fell to the factory. His bone lacing and dermal plating prevented him from dying from the fall. Instead he just rolled to the ground. There was nothing left of him. He felt whatever he once was, fall into oblivion while the machine inside of him crawl up into his mind and take over. He knew nothing of what was to come next. He knew nothing of what to do next. But he remembered one thing said by Ace.
âThe seasons are changing.â
And that they were. The leaves had fallen onto the ground in Novemberâs mind. His mind was fresh. It was clean. It had trackless snow upon it. Winter had come along with the desiccation associated with it. He had fought so long and so hard to keep what was left of him, for January, for October and for himself. But he only now cared about revenge, about killing, about destroying Joshua for what he had done.
As he was lying on the ground, the cool summer breeze rolled over him with the moonlight slowly fading away in the coming moments of daylight. His arm was throbbing but he turned off his pain receptors and continued to just lie there in the dirt waiting for something to come along and force him to move.
Ironically, something did. The whirring of a helicopter could be heard in the distance. Was it Lee and Jordi, or did they just assume he had died along with April, January and June? No, it was a different one. One he hadnât seen before.
Turning to look at this bi-wing, T-Hawk custom aircraft, he watched as the bay doors opened and out walked Ace. He survived? November for some reason, wasnât surprised at all.
âNovember, youâre still alive?â Ace said holding out his hand to November who just remained on the ground.
âHowâd you find me?â
âTracking beacon that the syndicate uses. I hacked into it to see if I could rescue any agents.â
âIâm the only one left.â
âIâm sorry November. I truly am. I know what itâs like to lose.â Ace still had his hand out, waiting for November to take it. But his hand would remain unmet for a while longer.
âI want to give you a chance at what you crave the most right now.â
âLet me guess. You want me to chase down Joshua and get you back the Stone right?â November finally looked over to see the pristine, suit wearing Ace who had a warm but stoic smile on his face.
âYes. You know youâll die without this injections the Syndicate gave you every day right?â
âYeah, thatâs kind of the plan.â
âWell look. I know youâve lost a lot. But I also know you want to see Joshua pay. And you can do that. If you donât heâll end the world as we know it the Stone of Garo. All you need to do is help me, and in that youâll be helping yourself. Also, I know for a fact that your stim-cocktails were a special recipe brewed by GenCorp. The leading Bioware laboratory in the West Coast of the UCAS. If you help me, I can get you those restricted Chems because I work for Yazan Gable.â
Ace was now smiling at the mention of the name Yazan Gable. November knew that there was something more to Ace, something that he hadnât told anyone and that it was a secret that no one would ever find out. Thatâs how Ace managed to always dance around the truth. With his lies. But November also could tell that he wasnât inherently evil and that his goal, as far as November knew, was a good one. One worth achieving, and if it saw to the death of Joshua, then it was a goal he could help with.
âAlright, fine.â November said, reaching up with his good arm, leaving the other limp at his side. Ace then pulled him up and briefed him on his next assignment.
âThe key to all of this, the insurance policy to my planâŚto our plan is a man. Heâs been captured by Aztecnology hitmen and heâs being moved to a checkpoint Corptown in the middle of Mexico. Itâs on the outskirts of Satillo, Mexico.â
âAnd you want me to go down there and bust him out all by myself?â
âWrong, donât you remember? I have a team thatâll accompany you. Theyâre already surveying the town. Iâll have my pilot fly you down there. Once youâre there youâll have to work things out with the three other members before going in to rescue Kryder. Extraction will be at the same location youâre meeting the three other agents.â Ace then began to walk away, towards the helicopter that had landed. âOh by the way, did I mention to you that one of the agentsâ was the former October in your Syndicate? You may have some answers or some closure when you speak with himâŚ.not that he talks all that much.â Ace said, holding his hand out once more to help November onto the helicopter.
âHow do I know I can trust you?â
âThe fact that we both want the same thing and your presence doesnât interfere with my operation. Youâd already know and be dead if I was lying to you.â Ace said, curtly and frankly. November was too tired to be offended or put off by Aceâs arrogance. But again, there was something about Ace that just made everything he said, law.
âAlright. Iâll find this man. Kryder is it?â
âYes. Heâll help us change everything. the world.â
âWhatâll you do, while Iâm down in Mexico looking for your man?â
âI cannot go down there with you. Kryder is the number two most wanted offender by Aztec. Iâm number one. Instead Iâll be up here preparing facilities, resources and contacts for our war on Joshua and Aztec. Weâll get the Stone back, youâll get your revenge and youâll help me save whatâs left of this world.â
Ace had begun to sound like Joshua. There was a seed inside of the two of them that was similar but brought one towards complete and utter evil. In fact, he couldnât tell what Joshua was anymore. Unstable perhaps. He couldnât tell what Ace was either. For all he knew, this could all end in betrayal.
Stepping into the helicopter November realized what this meant. He would become another tool, for another organization. Seeing that their will is realized. But this time would be different. This time he chose to help Ace. He was leaving everything behind, and although it was taken from him, it still felt like he was leaving home to fight a war. A war against Joshua. He swore it, to himself and on the lives lost that he would see Joshua take his last breath. The last thing November felt before finally falling asleep on the helicopter ride, was the fact that the air was different. It was changing. Not just for him, but for everyone. He finally now realized what Ace meant. It was true, that once he saved Kryder and embarked on this journey, the world would be a different place.
These next few months would all be a part of the Seasons of Change.
