A trope that gets to me: 'guard dog' character and their partner who are both fully aware of it and honestly don't care/kind of like it. Someone says "call your guard dog off" and their partner does call them off. That person, their 'guard dog', is someone who is unreservedly, irrefutably loyal to them. Someone undoubtedly dangerous who is willing to kill, to maim, to obey, simply because of their love for one another. There's no manipulation involvedโ it is loyalty, brutal, dogged loyalty. And it goes both ways.

This year, weโre shining a spotlight on our alumni: the talented writers and artists who successfully completed the Dragon Age Big Bang in previous years. All past DABB alumni were given the option of an interactive interview with our mod Alix, or an informal written survey. Q&A with Alix
What was your favourite thing about participating in the Dragon Age Big Bang?
It really is hard to pick just one. The community aspect is so incredible, and I met so many awesome people and made so many friends, many of whom I still talk to every day nearly a year later.
I also really loved collaborating my artist, who is such a wonderful and talented person, and who I am so glad I got to work with.
And finally, building on both of those, it really showed me what I was capable of. I'd never written a longer fic before, and the the encouragement from the community and from my artist helped me to create a work I'm still so proud of.
What advice would you give to new DABB participants?
For me, it really helped being anal about tracking my word count every day. I used a spreadsheet I made to track how much I was writing, and that helped me keep on track and motivated. It was also really helpful when the plot bunnies hit, because seeing where I was in terms of progress, I knew whether I could afford to add the words without putting myself behind. Every one has a slightly different approach to tracking and there's a thousand different tools out there, so find one that works for you.
What would you say to someone who is deciding whether or not to sign up?
Do yourself a favour and sign up! It's genuinely so much fun and the community is so wonderful and encouraging. You won't regret it.
Bonus question! What's it like coming back this year as a mod?
It's still a little surreal, but it's been really amazing. I really loved the community last year, but there's something really special about getting to connect with people through the interviews, and really just seeing the whole thing take shape.
