part of my sort of abandoned icemav great plains au.... it's one of those "i have the entire plot outlined but writing actual words is like breathing in space" kind of fics

"I'm set to take over. In thirty some-odd years," Maverick says. He's been kicking a large rock in a straight line for a quarter mile now. Sarah tried to do the same with a pebble and she gave up quick.

"As a cowboy?" Tom asks. Maverick launches his rock as far as he can into the open field, it buries itself about forty yards away.

"Already a cowboy."

"King of the cowboys?" Tom snickers. Maverick trips him as he saunters past. Sarah holds back a giggle and rushes over to make sure the dirt broke his fall better than it held itself together on the impact.

"King of the cowboys!" Maverick shouts, doing a spin as Tom huffs in the dust. Up ahead, within the next quarter mile Maverick could have been kicking his rock had he travelled alone, is the little bit of town he was looking for. Like a migrating pair of geese, there they were: Nick and Carole, steeped in regular Tennessee attire.
