My boss came to me today and casually asked if I could do a demo of a particular subject matter that’s my area of expertise on Friday for an important new partner. And I was like, well that’s an odd request, but “Sure!”
I just got the meeting invite.
There are 60+ people invited. Over half have already accepted. And the organizer is…basically it’s the equivalent of if I worked for Disney and they’d just acquired Pixar and I was invited by the VP of Pixar to a meeting with all the top execs and their managers to show them how Disney Things work.
And half of me is like.
You’re entrusting ME with being the first impression these people have of our product?? (flattered)
The other half of me is like.
You’re entrusting ME with being the first impression these people have of our product?????? (panicked)
Me to my boss today: Is it okay if I use an Indiana Jones analogy to help contextualize things for them at the beginning and then refer back to it as an anchor through the demo? Are analogies allowed? Or do I just need to be technical and skip my typical whimsy?
My boss: I’m aware of how you operate and in fact chose you for a reason. Please use the Indiana Jones analogy.
Me:
It went really well! They had super nice feedback and all my orgs/assets worked perfectly and several of them have already asked to be friends of whatever the hell it’s called on LinkedIn.
It’s a good thing I didn’t freak out at all about this, huh?
