Bankruptcy games. The U.S. Supreme Court just quietly gave its blessing to the so-called Texas two-step, a corporate maneuver to escape accountability through bankruptcy. The strategy was pioneered a decade ago by manufacturing company Georgia-Pacific, which faced tens of thousands of lawsuits over asbestos exposure caused by its products. With the help of its corporate lawyers, the company split itself into two and moved its liabilities to the new company, which it named Bestwall. Then, Bestwall declared bankruptcy, leaving the asbestos victims unable to obtain any restitution from Georgia-Pacific, which has billions at its disposal. 

🧴 The strategy has since been deployed by Johnson & Johnson and other cosmetics brands over their talc-based products, which have been linked to cancer. But despite some indications from the high court that it planned to intervene in such bad-faith bankruptcies, the Supreme Court last month declined to take up the Bestwall case, letting a ruling from a Texas two-step-friendly appellate court stand. 

That got me curious about it being a real Versace ring versus something one might find on other sites for a similar price and so, I asked him if he had any way to verify the authenticity. His answer? His brother in law is a licensed silver dealer who is supposed to test the ring soon.

Me, being me (and obviously not wanting to work on this audit prep) asked being licensed meant. In this case, the brother in law can sell all the silver he finds directly to a smelter without having to do a 40/60 cut with a third party. This brother in law routinely goes to antique shops with a tester and finds genuine silver usually for dirt cheap prices. If the silver jewelry has any gemstones, he pops them out and places them in a goblet (he has a goblet with gemstones!) and then sends the silver off for some nice change.

I was ready to quit my job, to say the least, and become a licensed jewelry dealer, after hearing all of this. Especially since silver is still above $60/ounce. Anything to avoid this audit, I suppose. The only thing I would do different is reuse those goblet gems in other non-silver settings and sell those to people.
