Every time I see people post something like “Poor Helios, he’s so stoic and professional while his kids are unhinged lunatics 😔” I have to giggle. You guys have no idea how deranged (affectionately) that man is; here are some examples:

1. He killed Icarus for basically no reason [Σ Eurip.]

2. Cursed Myrrha (mother of Adonis) to copulate with her father, again for no reason [Σ Ecl 10.18]

3. Rewarded his granddaughter’s filicide by gifting her a divine chariot [Eurip., Medea 1321]

4. Had kids with Athena ? somehow ? [Strabo, Geo. 14.1.18]

5. Was a complete sex pest and had to be stopped by Artemis [ps. Plutarch, De fluviis]

6. The entire Leucothoe myth [Ovid, Metamorphoses; a few others]

On the topic of Pandora

I can't be the only one who feels like both of the major interpretations of Pandora end up one-sided, nah?

Cuz, on one hand, we have 'Pandora was simply given curiosity and that is why she opened the jar' which makes her a victim. But it slso erases the original myth where she not only was told to open the jar by the gods, but she was also given almost perfect wisdom by Athena and the ability to lie by Hermes.

On the other hand, we have 'Pandora was evil' stories where she did it all on purpose. But those also don't make sense as that to me feels like blaming a sword for being made for battle. Pandora's one and only purpose was to be cause chaos in the human world by opening the jar.

My interpretation (again, I'm not saying the other are wrong and should be purged, this is just my opinion) is that Pandora simply thought she was was doing her purpose, not knowing the chaos she unleashed after opening the jar. How would a person taught since birth to do bad know that bad is bad?

And here ends my thesis on a random mythological figure, if anyone wants more, tag figures you want me to disect
