Tuesday Witchery: Still Standing Candle Spell
A little something for when life insists on kicking your ass.
Materials
Red candle
Black peoper
Coffee grounds
Dress the candle with coffee grounds and pepper or sprinkle the two in a circle around the base of the candle.
As you light the candle, think about what's been weighing you down. Don't hide from it. Face it. Embrace it. Think about all the things you've survived before, and how you're still here.
Take a moment to focus on the flame. Feel the warmth and take comfort in it.
Say, "I remain. Again and again, I remain."
Racism in pagan and witchcraft communities can be dismissing the issue of cultural appropriation by claiming it doesn't bother the gods and in fact they want you to do it.
true story. I was teaching a class on chaos magic at my local metaphysical shop a few weeks ago (not usually my cup of tea, but the shop owner was out of town for a few weeks and wanted to keep her calendar running as normal, so I volunteered to help out)
during my class I had mentioned that, while chaos magicians tend to use a very 'eclectic' approach to their magic, that it is vital to stay sensitive to other cultures and avoid appropriation. one of the students, an older gentleman, looked right at me and said "the gods don't care what race you are!"
only adding on this comment to say that, yes, this is an excuse that many people will try to peddle to you. don't fall for it.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how they’d be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba
Cinderella finding Araura (and falling in love)
I don’t know a snappy description but the my nemesis cynthia story certainly lives in my head
hilariously, these are almost all in my fic tag. so, a compiled list from the notes (and some extras):
The God of Arepo (graphic novel 1 / 2 / 3) (ebook)
The Monster of Sentan
The Witch’s Cat
Raise Both Children
Stabby the Roomba (honorable mention)
Cinderella Marries the Prince (comic)
My Arch Nemesis Cynthia
Pirates and Mermaid
Eindred and the Witch
The Demon King
The Cornerwitch
Grandmother Beetroot
Apocalypse Daycare Worker
Grandmother Accidentally Summons a Demon
New Year Saga
A Story About Changelings
Ranger in the King’s Forest
The Difference Between a Hare and a Rabbit
Goblin Men (Canines)

Hermes by Antoine Bonnet
Supreme herald of the realm above and the realm below, O Hermes of the netherworld, come to my aid, summon to me the spirits beneath the earth to hear my prayers, spirits that watch over my father’s house, and Earth herself, who gives birth to all things, and having nurtured them receives their increase in turn.
revealing of many things perhaps that the ‘you don’t know what you married’ fairytale trope contains such marked thematic differences between male and female protagonists… the selkie, animal wife/swan maiden, and lamia motifs being associated with the heteropatriarchal terror of perceived-feminine interiority; that if you don’t materially force your wife to stay, she might one day be gone, that there are things about her you don’t know and may not be able to understand. while female-focused versions of the structure—bluebeard, the robber bridegroom, fitcher’s bird, mr. fox, and so on—encapsulate the very real danger of abuse without recourse to anything but one’s own cleverness: the common fear that the person you marry and know might turn out to be a stranger after all, or that you may be forced to marry without even superficial knowledge or choice.

"To break the power of an evil witch's spell and turn the black magick back upon the instigator, an old 17th century counterspell from Salem calls for the boiling of pin sand needles in a pot filled with the urine of the bewitched victim." (p. 130, Candlelight Spells, Gerina Dunwich)
So, you know it's easy to make fun of this to be honest because we're killing someone in the last one because we know how to counterattack that spell using a 17th century Salem countercurse, which... if I recall correctly that was baking the urine into a biscuit and feeding it to the familiar of the witch (supposedly). And you know they definitely, definitely did that and no one got called to court for doing this and this is definitely NOT recorded in a specific court record of a thing they did. So yes of course, they would have definitely Salem specific counter curses. That's dripping with SARCASM.
Like there's so many counter charms now including a random reference to the LBRP. JUST THE WORDS. Can't actually let people know of this ritual because then they might reverse my killing cake decay spell.
AND THEN we have a whole "the evil eye was protected by wearing garlic" and the ancient Egyptians wore black eye make up to protect against it. Instead of just for FASHION or both. Like I know I'm speed running this but I am so sick of this damn book already and we're only on p. 135 and i have 50 more pages to write up about lmao.

"before performing this ceremony, it is traditional to fast with just water for three days. During this fasting period there should be much meditation, but absolutely under no circumstances should drugs, alcohol or tobacco be used. The body must be prepared by bathing in water to purify and remove all imperfections of the mind and psyche." (p. 135, Candlelight spells, Gerina Dunwich)
Friends, esteemed guests, and soon to be enemies - when someone decides to say "traditionally xyz was done" and then proceeds to tell you the most OUTLANDISH bullshit without any prep work and discussion about how rituals are structure, why things are done, how not just your soul kidneys but your soul-skin is purified by bathing in water (and just water, no soup, no nada).
This is where you must, under all circumstance, ignore this bullshitter forever and ever. A lot of ritual structure has reasoning. A lot of things around purification rituals have explanations for the things they are doing. This is basically absolutely nonsense, probably mirrored off some particularly religious ritual, pulled out of context and reshaped to give it a weird glossy cover. And this is the ceremonial evocation of spirit.
YOU WANT ME STARVING before I have to shove a spirit into a magickal circle dressed in some black satin robe. You want my body to be at it's most EXTREME weakness to command and compel a spirit.
You want me.. dazed and confused looking at the salt in my hand without licking it because SALT as a RING protects me more than SALT IN MY BODY.
AND THEN you have all this bullshit and color assignments and I already said how there's nothing explaining it but then we yet AGAIN have a reference to "black magick" and how to conjure negative spirits. AND YOU EXPECT someone is the barest of living basically who has had nothing for days, to be able to manage a whole evocation and negotiation and conversation with a spirit. Listen, well meaning sacrifices can be an important part of a spirit contract. But at the same time, if you have to be at this specific state and there's like twenty spirits on the corner over there *gestures with her thumb* and you over here just having a full fucking weird ass situation. Come on.
Just come on. You can trip and stumble over a spirit faster than this shit I swear to god.
'penelope unraveling her work at night,' silk embroidered with silk thread; dora wheeler, north american, 1886.
I think contemporary witchcraft sort of sterilized spirit work. There's this view that spirits are wish granters and it often kinda lacks reciprocity but also the general idea that spirits can say no. Spirits aren't obligated to reveal their true nature to you. Spirits aren't obligated to give you everything. Spirits can also reject offerings and tell you what they want and bargain with you on pacts. They're autonomous beings and beings with a great deal more power than we, that's why we go to them.
THINK LIKE AN OBELISK
ACT LIKE A TOTEM
WORK LIKE A CAIRN
FUCK LIKE A MONOLITH
Keychain Talisman
Use beads, crystals, charms, ribbons, knot magick, etc. to create something for your intention. Carrying it as a keychain gives your spell strength by keeping it close to you, embedding it with your energy often. Keeping a spell with your essentials (keys) emphasizes its importance. The sacrifice comes from knowing it may break with constant wear. Which gives you the opportunity to refresh!

Stop letting ai into occult spaces. Theres no reason for it. Ai is bad. Its bad for media literacy and the enviornment (its quite literally fucking up our water sources). How can u claim to be a witch/practitioner and single handedly be apart of a larger problem.
Pagan writers when talking about female deities: "They're a mother goddess"
Pagan writers when talking about male deities: "Well, their role and function is a lot more complicated and important than just just being a father god, and here's a 10k word essay discussing why they're more than just a father god"
OOOOO I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS
This is what originally turned me away from Wicca (among other reasons). So many books, blogs, and other resources seem to have so much built-in misogyny that it boggles my mind.
It's part of why I hate the invention of the "Mother-Maiden-Crone" archetype so much.
No, Hekate is not MMC. She is a powerful force of sorcery and liminality. No, the Morrigan is not MMC. She is a Goddess of bloodshed, mercy, and power.
Reducing such multi-faceted entities, such influential spirits, down to the box that patriarchal systems tried to fit them in is so disrespectful.
Freya, Frigg, Aphrodite, Hekate, Athena, etc. Do many Goddesses have aspects of fertility, nurturing, parenthood? Yeah, they do, just like Zeus, Ares, and Njordr. Is that all they are? Is that even the core of what they influence? Not always.
Immediate red flag if any book you're reading only has Goddesses in the footnotes, as mothers.
Very well said 🙏
