i’ve warmed up significantly towards the concept of small talk ever since i learned that its sole purpose is to make friendly noises.

as long as you smile and nod, people are satisfied. it’s just to show that you are nice and there with good intentions. we’re small in a big world and have to rely on other people to be decent to us. so we do our little human dance to each other to say, “i’m not here to hurt you. here’s something we have in common, like the weather or sports or itchy sweaters, so we both know we’re on the same team. we both agree on a basic fact, like that it is rainy or that being itchy is uncomfortable, and this proves we can get along. i’m being light-hearted and non-threatening right now.”

small talk isn’t to get to know a person. it’s just a greeting to affirm you’re buddies in the universe.

i am motivated by wanting the other person to know i am friendly, so i have gotten pretty decent at small talk when i used to hate it.

I'm in the brainstorming phase of creating friend "business" cards. Cards to hand to people I would like to befriend. Similar to my valentines I am planning some fish and fish facts. It should be dumb and weed out anyone who cannot find the joy in it.

If you had to put one thing on a card to introduce yourself, what would it be?

I have half made calling cards that I've neglected but I needed one for real the other day!!! I found a queer fish person in the wild and I had to scribble the resemblance of a calling card to exchange info.

#they came by to give an update/say thanks <3 #the guy is doing well and the dog is stitched up with some drains but overall doing okay #there is a part of me that's filled with rage bc nobody else stepped in but don't worry #a couple people have videos of the attack

#truly not my brightest moment but I jumped into a dog attack #two mastiff things attacking an older man and his lab #I managed to get one dog off and the mastiff owner eventually got the other #super quick police response but man does their training suck #they met panic with escalation #literally screaming at people #the older man is overall okay #lots of punctures and shallow lacerations #the lab seemed worse off but rushed to the e-vet so fingers crossed #dogs confiscated #so so fucking lucky this didn't happen to me and pike #it was literally right outside our door #met two more of the neighbours #one guy apologized profusely after the fact bc he thought it was my dog when I leashed one of the mastiffs and had been yelling at me
