Omigosh guys! I freakin love Stranger Things! dsjfghjfid! YAAASSS!
And now I will attempt to review it without going full on fangirl mode.
Stranger Things starts off when a boy, Will, goes mysteriously missing in a small quiet town in Idiana. His mom and brother are devastated and try to the sherif’s help; his three friends take it upon themselves to trace back his steps and find him. Instead of Will, they end up finding a wide eyed, silent girl on the run who seems to know more than she’s letting on. As the story progresses it becomes possible the government and other worldly force are involved.
Sound intense? Sound tangled? That’s cuz it is!
I saw a title somewhere that said Stranger Things is basically a love letter to the 80s, and yes that’s a perfect dicription of this hit show! The Duffer brothers, the creators, love the 80s and it’s made appernt through many subliminal references through out the show. For example Star Wars The Empire Strikes back would have been released a few years prior to the setting in Stranger Things and the boys mention how they have plans to see the movie. There are also Star Wars toys around the house and the boys compare Star Wars to particular personal situations on more than one occasion.
There are also not so suttle scenes clearly influenced by other 80s movies. Like the scene from E.T. when the kids are riding their bikes. That was basically a cut and paste. It was exciting to see…then it kind of bothered me that those scenes were so similar. But any complaints were out the window because yes, there were a couple of scene set ups I recognised from other movies but Stranger Things has such a unique story line that those just become subliminal and therefore they just become an easter egg, a tip of the hat to those movies and it’s directors.
Not only did the Duffer brothers drive inspiration from Steven King and Spielberg’s earlier works but they also took some inspiration from their beloved video games such as Silent Hill, The Last of Us and Dark Souls.
» On the Acting and Characters:
All right, all right, enough of that. What about the acting?
The actors were phenomenal! They fit into their characters so well. I can’t imagine anyone else doing a better job. There are a range of different types of characters; we have the boys Dustin, Mike, and Lucus who all have a different type of personality but compliment each other; we have Joyce who’s Will’s mom who starts to sound and look unhinged when she believes she can contact her son through lights. This character was exellently played by Wynona Rider. It was pure monther’s desperation to find her child and determination to do everything she could no matter how outlandish it looked to outsiders.
And though Eleven (the wide-eyed kid) doesn’t say much, SO MUCH is conveyed through facial expressions and the few words that are said!
There isn’t a lot I can give away without soiling something so I’ll just say this: The suspense is real in this show. This is definitely a binge worthy show, so make some popcorn, or whatever goodies your heart desires, sit yo butt down and be prepared to have your mind blown.
Have you seen this show? Are you dying for the next season? Stranger Things fans where you be???
