⢠simon was one of his choirboys. he was strange, quiet and vulnerable, but he was still âone of themâ in jackâs mind. he was inside jackâs original little world of uniforms, singing, discipline and shared schoolboy identity
⢠piggy was never inside that world. from the beginning, jack treats piggy less like a boy and more like an object of irritation, disgust and entertainment
⢠piggy is fat, asthmatic, lower-class, physically awkward and socially embarrassing. jack does not just dislike him. he dehumanises him
⢠so when simon dies, there is at least a chance jack can feel the horror of having helped kill a boy he once recognised as human
⢠but when piggy dies, jack can hide from that horror more easily because piggy had already been turned into âpiggyâ long before roger pushed the rock
⢠this is why piggyâs nickname matters so much. the boys do not murder a boy whose name they know. they murder âpiggyâ, the joke, the body, the thing they have spent the whole novel making less than human
⢠jack can regret simon because simonâs death breaks through the fantasy for a second
⢠piggyâs death does not break the fantasy. piggyâs death is the fantasy reaching its natural conclusion
