Story of the Belgian-Moroccan Ali Aarrass: http://www.petitions24.com/consular_assistance_for_ali_aarrass Pls read and sign if you have some time. It's also in French and Nederlands. #FreeAliAarrass #AliAarrass #torture #unfairtrial #morocco #Belgium
You’ll end up real disappointed if you think people would do for you what you’d do for them
I'm disappointed like this every week.
"For all their pretense otherwise, it’s clear that Huffington and her commercial partners care very little about the effects of sleeplessness on those who are not their target audience. In April 2016 a sleep-deprived Uber driver, too tired to continue driving, asked his passenger to take over, and woke up to find the car embroiled in a high-speech chase with police. A Huffington Post reporter, Sarah Digiulio, was prevented from “writing” about the story. (At the HuffPo, “writing” means “linking to.”) Post senior editor Gregory Byer told Digiulio that they wouldn’t be linking to it because Huffington Post was currently “partnering with Uber on our drowsy driving campaign.” In other words, Huffington’s policy was to ignore or actively censor any story that actually proved that sleeplessness is a function of capitalism, and to protect her financial partner from being implicated in any resulting damage. In response to the story, Uber suspended the driver, then issued a statement about the dangers of sleeplessness (which predictably cited the company’s link up with the HuffPo and Toyota “to raise awareness of the issue and help save lives.”)"
you havent said anything about the burkini ban
and I don’t need to.
I really love this response. I made mistake years ago to think I had to say something about everything about Muslims or Moroccans in the news.

‘Amazigh’ and 'African’ are increasingly used as labels/hip identities to wear as cool costumes by North Africans who confuse this with being radical and who use it for some fame; they put on any identity that can give them a platform or media attention somewhere. People who called themselves a supporter of panarabism a year ago are now promoting themselves with their Amazigh roots and support for BLM while also responding with 'we are all Africans’ when the conversation is about anti-blackness among North Africans.
I think there is really interesting material here for people who are researching how social media are used to form/switch identities, self-presentation/promotion and career opportunities.

'Makhzen' can't be translated as 'police'. Darija isn't a 'language derived from Moroccan Arabic'. If you don't know that Darija just IS Moroccan Arabic then we can question your credibility as a writer about Morocco, yes also if you're Moroccan. This is basic stuff. But there are too many media who allow this to pass because having some quality in the information about Morocco isn't that important, as long as they get the clicks and shares.

I understand English and (a little less) French so I’m informed and warned about public figures who are racist or empty opportunistic clowns from France, Canada, US etc.
Now that a Dutch tv program is promoting Maajid Nawaz I know beforehand what he is about.
It makes me think about how a language can help you detect bullshit. Which brings me to how those who don’t understand Dutch have no idea why I’m not impressed at all when Tunahan Kuzu, Dutch politician, refused to shake hands with Netanyahu. They didn’t follow the discussion where activists told him he should boycot the meeting and instead support a demonstration or other protest. Kuzu did what activists told him would only legitimise the position and acts of Netanyahu. There’s nothing to discuss with him. He doesn’t care about all the things Kuzu could say to him. Kuzu knew that very well but preferred to go anyway and to do a little performance to look ‘anti Israel’ and benefit his image to get votes from PoC in the Netherlands. So he stood there looking like a clown but satisfied to know he would become a hero on social media, especially in places where people don’t understand Dutch. And that’s exactly what happened. This is one example of how easily people can be fooled.

I recommend this website for those interested in good critiques of 'identity politics', intersectionality, Twitter activism and its 'call out culture'. I started reading her because of how well she explains what's wrong with free writing. It led me to her other work on how the leftist/progressive nonprofit sector and the arts world are becoming more neoliberal and more other topics.

Non-French Muslims rushing to write think-pieces every time something happens in France
Lol yet I understand why Belgian Muslims feel the need to say something because when shit happens in France we will smell it here too. But most of us should think more before speaking or writing, because when I read most of what Belgians write it's either totally missing the specific context of France or just cheap copying of what has been written elsewhere by people who actually now what they are talking about.
