20180922 [N Interview] ③ Cha Hakyeon talks about contract renewal and VIXX members’ affection for one another
-I heard that all of the VIXX members still live together in a dorm. Usually, groups only live together for a certain time and then choose to live separately.
▶We like living together. The company actually told us 2 or 3 years ago that we could live separately. If a member wanted to live independently, they just had to say so. But when we talked about it, we decided to just keep living together, and we still are. Of course, we do each still need our own space. There are times when we need to have emotional outbursts alone. Sometimes, I want to watch sad dramas, or I just want to cry, but since I’m the leader, I don’t want to show negative emotions in front of the members. That’s why I think it’s important to have some kind of personal space.
-The members sent a coffee truck to your filming site.
▶They sent a truck with the banner ’We support God Jimin-nuna’. (laughter) When the members have individual activities, I like to go visit each of them and support them. I like seeing them make a different image than the one they have in VIXX. I think it’s really interesting. This time, Hyuk uploaded a message in our group chat that said, “Should we send a coffee truck to N-hyung?” even though I am also in that group chat. (laughter) The members all exchanged suggestions, and then really sent me a coffee truck. Hyuk especially likes Han Jimin-sunbaenim. I think it was really amusing that they sent a truck with such a funny sign, and I’m thankful to them.
-VIXX’s contract is going to end soon. Do you think you’ll re-sign?
▶ We haven’t been able to talk about the contract yet. We can’t really talk about serious things. We’d all gather together (and talk about it) if somebody said they wanted to, but so far, nobody has been able to. Although we haven’t talked exactly about that, I know that all of the members have a lot of love for VIXX. Even when the members do their own activities, we all talk a lot with each other and feel a lot of things. Because of that, we end up supporting each other even more.
-What does Cha Hakyeon think about this?
▶I have actually gone into a number of slumps through the years. My most recent one was last year. I was really worried about what direction we should go in as VIXX. The group has really intense concepts, so I was worried about whether we needed to find a middle ground or not. I was even more worried since it’s our 7th year since debut. It got to the point where I was sick of watching even my own performances. But in the midst of that, we did the “Shangri-la” performance at the Gayo Daejejeon, and I got a lot of strength from it. I felt like VIXX had found a new angle. I said something about it to the members too. This is a time for us to think about what kind of picture we’d like to draw VIXX as.
-You have to do your military service soon.
▶If the country calls me, then I have to go. Since I’m a healthy young man, I’ll naturally go and come back. I think serving in the military is a natural thing to do. I’ve also gotten a lot of tips from people who have already done their service.
-You’re 29 now, and you’re just about to turn 30. How are you preparing yourself for when you turn 30?
▶In the past, I was very worried about turning 30. I’d be lying if I said that I wasn’t still anxious about it, but I’m thinking a bit differently about it now. When I was in a slump, I thought of who I would be in 5 or even 10 years. It’s possible that I won’t be able to achieve my goals, but I think that now I am walking towards them. Since I’m doing that, I’m no longer afraid of getting older.
