Żuraw to dawny dźwig portowy bez którego port nie dałby rady funkcjonować. Dźwigi bowiem służyły do przeładowywania towarów ze statków na nadbrzeże i na odwrót. Pierwsze wzmianki o Żurawiu pochodzą z XIV wieku. Była to konstrukcja w 100% drewniana, która w wyniku pożaru w 1442 roku doszczętnie spłonęła. W tym samym roku rozpoczęła się odbudowa dźwigu, ale już konstrukcji murowano-drewnianej. Przez kolejne stulecia, aż do XIX wieku Żuraw był niezbędnym elementem gdańskiego portu. 200 lat temu stracił swoją funkcję i był wykorzystywany m.in. do stawiania masztów czy też jako podnośnik dla łodzi, które wymagały naprawy sterów i śrub. W XIX wieku we wnętrzach Żurawia znajdował się m.in. zakład fryzjerski i szewski.

Poza funkcją dźwigu, gdański Żuraw pełnił również funkcję bramy miejskiej. Do dziś prowadzi ona z ulicy Szerokiej na Długie pobrzeże.

The Crane is a former port crane without which the port would not be able to function. Cranes were used to reload goods from ships to the quayside and vice versa. The first mentions of the Crane date back to the 14th century. It was a 100% wooden structure that burned down completely in a fire in 1442. In the same year, the reconstruction of the crane began, but this time as a brick and wooden structure. Over the following centuries, until the 19th century, the Crane was an essential element of the Gdańsk port. 200 years ago, it lost its function and was used, among other things, to put up masts or as a lift for boats that required repairs to their rudders and propellers. In the 19th century, the interior of the Crane housed, among other things, a hairdresser's and a shoemaker's shop.
