En la película el antagonista principal es un personaje llamado Imhotep, sumo sacerdote del faraón Seti. Obviamente, el Imhotep de la película no es el mismo Imhotep de este artículo. De hecho, el Imhotep en que estamos interesados vivió durante el Reino Antiguo, más de mil años antes del reinado de Seti I. Este Imhotep fue también una figura benévola y hoy en día sobre todo es recordado por haber sido el arquitecto de la pirámide escalonada del faraón Zoser. Imhotep fue, además, médico, sacerdote, ingeniero, erudito y, básicamente, un miembro esencial de la corte del faraón Zoser.
