I disagree with people who say he acts out of character. He's just as confident as he always has been, but it's not like the games where he solves the problem and things go back to the status quo, the comics highlight that this free-spirited attitude has consequences.

His free spirited attitude is what let Eggman create the Metal Virus, it's what led Belle to lose her father, and it's what led to Surge and Kit's traumatic creation. The Metal Virus made him directly confront the consequences and under all the stress forces him to question it, but we see that it only strengthened his outlook when he overcame it. When Surge confronts him he tries to bring her on-side to his view of freedom, but she sees him as preachy and out-of-touch. Sonic is inspirational to his friends and they take on a similar mindset to him, but this causes them to butt heads with Lanolin, someone who has a more grounded view.

Sonic is freedom manifest. He doesn't stop to strategize or to contemplate, he just does what he thinks is right. He doesn't kill because freedom extends to everyone. He doesn't bring his enemies to the police because he wants them to find good in their own heart. He's for the people and against the system, but being a force of nature doesn't mean he's immune from critique. IDW is so good because it highlights that Sonic is not some perfect character, that his worldview is flawed, but he's just as confident in his beliefs as he always has been.

Sonic is always the protagonist, but it's up to the reader to decide who's right or wrong. That's what freedom is all about. -🪱
