80's Storm & Wolverine (leaders of a bunch of young X-Men at the time, circa 1987's Uncanny X-Men #215) commission by Alan Davis.
general zaroff should be a more popular public domain villain I think. Nothing much has been done itâs him in the 4 years heâs been public domain. Lots of potential there
The Underwater Menace is Amazing, Hereâs Why
Okay⌠I fucking love the Underwater Menace. It is utter perfection. Hereâs why:
Jamie is rather confused in this story, understandable. As far as he knows he was just kidnapped by some faeries (albeit well meaning ones)
[Image Description: A black and white telesnap photo of Jamie McCrimmonâs face, looking directly to the camera with a confused expression.]
This is the face of a very confused man. âWhat have I come upon?â, yes what indeed Jamie?
I like that we get a bit of internal monologue, itâs different
Jamie canonically speaks Gaelic in the show!
Polly can speak four languages, good for her
âVital secret will die with me. Dr. Wâ â just⌠I canât⌠itâs great
Of course they are about to be eaten by sharks!
Oh Zaroff, finding the Doctor amusing. Well, it is Two so thatâs fair.
Why wouldnât Zaroff have a pet octopus?
Okay, more seriously, the fish people are a horrifying concept. Like, they were ordinary people who were turned into fish and can presumably never leave the sea again and they have to gather food for the same people who subjected them to their fate! Honestly, I would love it if this idea was done in New Who at some point (with better effects⌠what am I talking about, the cardboard eyes are amazing!)
Good that the one non-white character doesnât die, the Irish guy is a bit stereotypical though
The Doctorâs face when he fiddles with the lights to save Polly⌠âoh, did I do that?â, just epic Second Doctor trolling
[Image Description: A black and white photo of the Second Doctor holding a piece of equipment in his right hands from a power supply box which is in the background. The Second Doctorâs expression is one of mock innocence, with his left index finger to his lip]
âDid I do that?â, well I guess he is rather bumbling... maybe he didnât know what he was doing?
âTell me, why do you want to blow up the world?â, pitch perfect delivery there.
âFor the achievementâ, do you know what? Fair. I can respect that.
Ben and Jamie in tight leather⌠yes, me likes
[Image Description: A black and white telesnap photo of Jamie McCrimmon and Ben Jackson wearing black faux leather jumpsuits. Jamie has his arms folded and has a wry expression, Ben is slightly behind Jamie and has an open grin.]
The Doctor: *is very happy to see Ben and Polly but is keeping a hushed tone*. Also The Doctor: Jamie!
The beginning of a beautiful relationship
Two is 5â9â! He literally says so in Episode 3!!
I fucking love Zaroff, âAt least help me stand at your side so I may feel the aura of your goodnessâ⌠that is such obvious cheesy bullshit so of course Polly buys it.
And of course âNothing in ze world can stop me now!!!â
[Image Description: A black and white photo of Professor Zaroff, wearing a black cape over his laboratory clothes, laughing maniacally. He is looking offscreen, but not directly to the camera.]
A man who cannot be defeated.
Okay, the one thing I donât like is Jamie slapping Polly. That was uncalled for. Though I guess Iâd rather it was Jamie than Ben (if it has to be anyone, which is 100% did not)
Zaroffâs death is pretty grim actually, drowning in his own lab
I liked Ben dragging the Doctor to safety, heâs got a good head on his shoulders
Itâs pretty sad when Jamie and Polly and the Doctor and Ben think the other pair didnât survive, I really wish their reunion survived
Yay! Jamie is enjoying himself! I hope that continues and he doesnât see any phantom pipers anytime soonâŚ
So basically, I love the Underwater Menace and Iâm really annoyed that they cancelled the planned animations for Episodes 1 and 4. I hope they revisit it at some point (since they do seem to be animating quite a lot of Season 4). Or better yet they find Episodes 1 and 4 (not very likely but a girl can dream⌠of fish people).
Gallery Zaroff.
