Expecting
Hi guys! This is the first half of a YA supernatural short story I wrote this week. Hope you like it!
âYouâre spilling the coffee, babe.â
Agatha pointed a long, brown finger at the ceramic mug. Dark liquid overflowed past the rim and pooled onto the table of The Starlight Diner.
âWhat? Oh--!â
Ronald jerked the coffee pot away from his mug. A well-worn crease appeared between his brows as he reached for the napkins.
âSorry,â he said, though it was not her lap that was soaked but his. He did that oftenâapologize when the need seemed far afield.
A habit of language, he had told her once.
Between the two of them the only apology was owed from her; she was the one who had blurted it out, without any preamble to ease her boyfriend into the fact that she was--
âPregnant?â Ronald paused his wiping to flick his gaze towards her.Â
The shock had worn off somewhat, but the width of his eyes could rival the dinner plates on which their evening meal had been served. The slight downturn of his lids had always prevented them from reaching the infantile nature of their light blue hue. More than once, Agatha had found herself wondering if melancholy dispositions could be pre-ordained by God.Â
She held his questioning gaze, but didnât respond. Her ears twitched at the unmistakable clip-clop of heels coming up behind them. A waitress.Â
âMore napkins, please,â she said, without bothering to turn her head.
âSure thing, hon.â
Agatha caught a flash of blonde hair in her periphery. The golden locks had achieved the modern miracle of being both shiny and inextricably linked with grime at the same time. The same went for The Starlight Diner itself. Agatha smelled cigarette smoke on the waitress, but not on her breath. Her hair and her skin were the only things that wreaked. She didnât care for tobacco, but someone she lived with was a heavy smoker.
The waitress sauntered through the swinging door to the kitchen. Her breast pocket rustled with about fifteen dollars in cash. The money could cover a pack of nicotine patches. She cared about this person enough to want them to quit. Agatha took a breath and called her senses back to focus. If she let them wander too far she would start picking up radio tunes from the cars zipping by on the overpass above the diner.
Focus.Â
Ron was smiling.
âYouâre happy?â The words slipped from Agathaâs mouth. Too loud. A few people at the counter turned their heads to look.
âOf course, Iâm happy.âÂ
Iâm the one whoâs supposed to be glowing, Agatha thought wryly.Â
âBaby, this isâŠI canât believeâŠA father, Iâm going to be a father.â
âYouâre forgetting who the mother is, Ron,â Agatha spat, bitterness that had nothing to do with the coffee, rising in her throat.
Confusion brought Ronald back to earth.
âYou.â
Such innocence in his voice, and yet the word condemned her like a knife to the heart. The metal fork she had been clutching collapsed in her hand like clay.Â
Ronald noticed. He glanced out the window at the gibbous moon. It was waxing, nearly a full orb that competed with the blinding neon that decorated the windows for control over the night. Slowly, he reached across the table to take Agathaâs hand. With his thumb, he rubbed circles over the skin beneath her knuckles until her grip relaxed beneath his tender touch; the disfigured fork clattered to the table. Â
âI suppose itâs getting near,â he said gently.

Any Recs for things that go from lighthearted/fluffy to dark and edgy?
Yay for escapist literature (also known as rereading books I liked in the ninth grade) and Honestly. I have not read/seen/heard of anything that comes even close to matching the level of this trope as achieved by the Gallagher Girls series. Iâm open to tv shows, movies, books, comics, etc but just know my frame of reference is a book series that goes fromÂ

~I have severe memory loss because I was brutally tortured by a terrorist organization. I murder a guy with a gun I donât remember picking up. I am brainwashed into committing suicide, and the only reason it doesnât happen is because people catch me after I jump out a window.~~

2014
The crowd called for him praising him like he was a god. Going nuts. It was the winter finale game they been undefeated all season and it was time. He rushed out to the ice and gave them a show skating around waving his hands up. He was only a freshman and on the varsity team for St. Cloud State University. He wears his black, red, and white with pride. Hockey his friends was his life and the girl of the week. Finn was the young man on the campus. It was his life. One he would never give up.Â
The blood rushes down his forehead his mouth crunch harder onto the mouthpiece. He looks at his teammates as the captain told them the next play. It was Finn's big moment. It was up to him to get the point that could give them the win. BREAK He waited for tell. The bits of ice rush in his face as he rushed down to the goal. Fitting the enemy trying to steal his shine. As he took it he hit it in. The crowd scream in excitement. Others turn around to Finn on the ground screaming. Throwing the helmet off he screams as he tried to get up. Stumbling back down. Before blacking out he saw the scoreboard. THEY WON
