Playing FPS games with a controller as a Keyboard+Mouse player, part one
I wasn't a big controller player on PC (despite I had consoles before and played a lot of console games, mostly on PS2 and PS3), but last year, I have just decided to buy an XBOX controller just for playing games in the way that they're meant to be. I've tried a lot of games, including The Legend of Zelda: OoT, Hades 2, Dead Cells, and most notably Dark Souls. But I have never ever tried to play a FPS game with a controller, because I've got so much used to standard keyboard+mouse control scheme that playing a FPS game felt, and still feels, weird to me.
So today ladies, gentlemen and whomever the fuck you are, I've decided to play one of my all-time favourite game series with it: Borderlands. Yeah I know. Liking Borderlands games aren't cool at all. I know Randy Pitchford is a jerk who should shut the fuck up, but I can't help man. One of my other all-time favourite game series is also Diablo, and Borderlands, I think, is just FPS Diablo. I'm sorry but this formula makes something so good that just feels right to me. Especially the earlier entries of it (1, 2, TPS) nailed the formula, BL2 is one of my all-time favourite games ever because of that.
Now let me be clear: I really don't care about the story and the lore that much honestly. Borderlands games have relatively mediocre stories, only the second game is a little bit better than others (I haven't played Wonderlands and 4, yet) because of Handsome Jack factor.
But the gameplay, oh boy, the gameplay is biblical. Shoot, get better guns, shoot more, get legendary guns that does a lot of things and feels different than the other guns which makes the game so much fun to me, not including the other items like Shields, Relics, Class Mods, Grenades and even Action Skills with Skill Trees that has a ton of things to elevate your build... And when you finish the main story, you're just getting started. Trust me, if it was only for the main story, I wouldn't care about the game that much. Because BL games only has so much limited stuff on the main story (and despite it is still fairly large). Borderlands games also has some of the best expansions on the market here, adds a lot of extra side story content (with new guns and bosses to farm of course) and endgame content such as raid bosses and more level ups, and even more tiers of guns (for example: Seraphs, Pearlescent, Effervescent etc.)
Let's just stop yapping about the series there and talk about how is my first experience with a FPS game with controller: It feels weird. Yeah. Especially when you try to do stuff that you can do with K+M, it feels really clunky and, off. But this is my first impression with just the tutorial section of Borderlands, the first. I know it's very short for a first impression but I haven't been able to experience the game in an expensive period of time with the controller, so for now I'm going to keep it short.
Well maybe in the future, I'm will write a part 2, if I decide to continue with it. Take care, be nice and have fun.
Just picked up this baby today!!

Xbox Controllers Getting a Drift Fix
tool called DriftGuard has added a new memory calibration feature aimed at reducing stick drift problems on Xbox controllers. Instead of physically replacing parts, the software works by recalibrating how the controller reads joystick movement and stores those adjustments directly in memory.
The update is designed to help controllers that have started developing inaccurate stick input over time, something that has become a common complaint across modern gamepads. DriftGuard’s creator says the process can extend the usable life of controllers that might otherwise feel frustrating or unusable.
The article notes that this approach won’t magically repair hardware damage, but it could improve smaller calibration issues and reduce the need for immediate replacements. It also reflects how much controller drift has turned into a wider industry problem rather than an isolated Xbox issue.
Observation: At this point, “controller drift” feels less like a rare defect and more like a standard stage in owning modern hardware. The fact that software fixes are becoming a whole category of tools says a lot by itself.

baby's first xbox controller
My hands, destroyer of game controllers.
i posted a bit ago about wanting to take pictures of the way my favorite controller has been worn down by my playing games... I didn't realize at the time that I have only had this controller for just under 4 years. I ordered it in late February of 2022 and here we are in early February of 2026, and I have some photos to share.
Generic view of the whole controller shows the places my thumbs have worn of the paint in the areas I rest my thumbs when I am not using them to push buttons. I find it interesting that despite the fact that I could put my thumbs in essentially the same positions of empty space on either side, but I don't.
The D-pad has a lot of wear on the lower left quarter and it's almost impossible to see from looking at it from above, and even these oblique angles don't show it as much as I'd like.
Can you uh... can you tell which trigger button I use more? All of the back of the controller had texture bumps, all of the bumps on the areas my palms cover are completely polished off. The trigger and bumpers only still have as much texture to see because they have more angles to hide from my fingers and palms.
And now for my favorite photos in this post... the joysticks.
The joystick I use to move my character (L-stick, top photo) has been worn down to expose quite a bit of the bare underlying plastic, AND there is a DENT IN THE STEM from it hitting the outer ring and that is WILD to me.
The camera stick (R-stick, bottom photo) is less worn, but there is some of the plastic starting to peek through, and it has a scuffed stem.
AANY way I ordered some joystick caps and they arrived yesterday and it definitely feels different having them on. How long with they last against my caustic hands though? -cue sinister laughing-
Does anyone else get really annoyed by how underutilized the xbox controller's expansion port is? You're seriously telling me they make a modular controller and its only mods are a really uncomfortable keyboard and a mute button?? We could have gyro, a mic and speaker, a touchpad, a screen, etc but NOPE let's make it useless instead
