Whatever path we choose - full-time work, part-time work, staying at home, parenting, or remaining child-free - someone will always have an opinion on it.

The contradiction isn't in our choices. It's in the expectations placed upon us. We're expected to be maternal but ambitious, present but productive, selfless but self-sufficient. Every role seems to be praised by some and criticised by others.

Of course, not everyone judges these choices, and experiences differ from person to person. But for many women, the pressure of conflicting expectations is very real. Whether we focus on a career, raise children, do both, or choose a different path entirely, there can be a sense that we're being measured against impossible standards.

Perhaps the real problem isn't how women choose to live their lives - it's that society too often expects women to be everything, all at once.
