I’ve had a long week. Anytime I’m feeling a little blue I know it’s time for a Studio Ghibli movie. I chose Takahata’s 1994 gem, Pom Poko. It was the right choice. I’m not sure if it was from sheer exhaustion or the commendable (albeit awkward at times) dubbing of the Japanese dialogue, but I laughed out loud multiple times while watching this film. And yet by the end I was so touched and almost weepy. Yasujirô Ozu 1959’s Good Morning (original title Ohayô) is probably the cutest movie I have ever seen. Dancing Lady was absolutely adorable. A good ole’ combo of Ziegfeld Follies with MGM stars. So many good moments with Gable and Crawford. The only thing I didn’t find believable was Crawford’s dancing. I’m ashamed to say this was my first Michael Redgrave movie and I don’t know why because I adored him from the first moment he appeared on screen. I’m a big fan of Hitchcock films but somehow always missed this 1938 mystery-comedy, The Lady Vanishes. Not surprisingly, everything works really well in this movie. Redgrave is great, Margaret Lockwood is great, the banter is top notch, and it’s an overall fun watch. Not only was 1953’s Lili my first choice off the movie list but it was also the movie I rang in the new year with. A great decision for both occasions. Leslie Caron is so believable as precious, naive, pure lil Lili and if it wasn’t for her performance I think the movie would have come across as flat or even creepy... ok Mel Ferrer talking to Caron through puppets is a lil strange but somehow Charles Walters makes it work.
