I had a jewel in my hand

and I didn’t spend enough time

That’s what we get called as social studies teachers. Usually I can brush off the jokes.

However today, when I raise my hand in a staff meeting to ask a question and I’m told: “oh your SS you don’t get a vote.” I’m literally completely over it.

In meetings we are constantly told that SS is there only to support LA classes. So being a team player I make my lesson plans extremely LA heavy while still sticking to my SS curriculum.

Even though I’ve continuously showed growth since I started teaching 5 years ago with the low and AIG students I get a “you need to do better because LA as a whole regressed. So therefore SS team you’re also not going a good job teaching LA concepts.”

My curriculum counts.

History matters.

I work my ass off for my kiddos and my content because it’s more than just a lesson to me. I’m teaching these students how to live, how to be an informed citizen, how to learn from past mistakes.

My content deserves a seat a the table just like everyone else.

I believe this will be my last year at my school 😪
